The industrialization in the north is also known as the market revolution. This was characterized by the size of the market. Technological revolution would be unfit for market revolution it because there were a few industries. Most manufactures by then also used old tools and methods. It was until 1850 that they started using the new technologies. This is referred to as mechanization since it involved the use of machines in large scale production. As a result, laborers would mostly be required in the plantations (Ryan, M., 2001).
Market revolution led to the rapid expansion and construction of the roads and canals. A good example of the constructions was the Erie Canal which was a 363 mile from New York to Great Lakes across the Atlantic Ocean. It was used as transportation between these regions which did not require the use of portage. Later, it was replaced by New York State Barge Canal which was bigger. It was very instrumental in the facilitation of mobility of people during this time.
In the” revolutionary” most Americans participated in the local markets. The market was often labeled as “traditional “or “pre-capitalist” and they were integrated within a broader web of relationships and obligations tying the community members together. This was based on what crop to grow that could offer greatest profit, where to find best price available and grew where higher prices in a distant city offset transportation cost. In brief, profit making became the new way of farming operation system to cope with the economic growth. This led to the emergence of social classes determined by their contribution to wealth production. For instance, there were the middle classes who were in the middle of the social hierarchy between the rich merchants and the poor laborers. Besides, there were laborers
The market revolution was made dynamic. It went beyond selling and buying of goods, the farmers and the craftsmen had their set goals and objectives as far as their work was concerned (Johnson, Paul. E., 2004). It is then there work was commercialized. With the new approach in place, tension loomed in the business. It meant that there were strange business partners, lack of trust with the new business persons, lack of capital and few laborers. In short unlike the traditional market, the new market provided new opportunities and freedom, it antagonized the peaceful co-existence of the community. This hence raised concern. The traditional market in the other hand anchored and assisted to stabilize the community. It involved the putting out system in which sub constructors were incorporated in the recruitment of laborers. However, such a system might be exploitative to the workers because of the long chain which involves an indirect engagement.
It is during this period that the sense of women awakened towards religion as well as their roles. The two most important events in the social and cultural history can be noted in the evangelical Protestantism and how women changed in both the way they thought and lived was correlated. It led to the rise of the Lowell Mill Girls who were women who moved in the urban centers to work in the textile industries. Most of the women who were young got converted and through this their entire families were converted. This was the major cause why the roles of the women were redefined in both religious and moral authority. Another major transformation that was realized in the market revolution is the commercialization of the economic life and the reduction in the subsistence farming. For the first time the textile industries came up. Some of the examples of the textile mills were in Massachusetts and Lowell. This was of great assistance to women of the middle class who could spend less time in spinning and weaving clothes. This is what has been called the American intervention of the nineteenth century
During the colonial America, men had control on how their children were raised, matters of rights, religion, political power and wealth. However in the nineteenth century the Americans came to be liberated in the gender revolution. This is what is currently seen as old-fashioned and is oppressive to women that needs total liberation (Sellers, C., 2007). In matters that appertains education of their siblings, support and selection of the spiritual leaders and all matters that are related to morals and manners, they have shown superiority. Ironically, the middle class women of the north, domesticity came to be an asset through which they obtained the public voices. Similar to that, the writers of best lings did public acclaim.
In conclusion, the market revolution greatly impacted on the lives of the people especially in the industrialized north. A part from facilitating the development of infrastructure, it segregated the society into social classes and changed the role of people in the community.
