The Article provides a comprehensive account of marketing. Author has portrayed how employees of various divisions misunderstand the concept of marketing when they consider it as responsibility of the marketing department only. Marketing is the joint effort of all the departments of an organization and every department plays important role at different stages and contributes significantly in the whole process.
Mr. George beautifully describes different functions and responsibilities of various departments. The development of a new product starts from identification of new opportunities by marketing team. Market research team helps in analyzing feasibility of the product, sales and revenue forecast, and identifies the changes, required at various levels for success of the product. The process is further handled by various teams like finance, engineering, operation and quality team, advertisement team, sales team for selling and other supporting teams for miscellaneous tasks.
The business development team takes care of packaging, positioning, branding, pricing and product distribution. This team is also responsible for a continuous monitoring of external environment and market trends like upcoming products, new technology, socio-economic changes, and political changes. All these functions require different type of skills sets and expertise. Based on my personal experience I can say that marketing department plays an important role in managing product, creating a unique positioning for the product, providing a great experience to the customer but it cannot perform all the tasks independently hence a collaborative effort of every department is required to achieve the success of the product. For example a retail store cannot operate without accountants, inventory management staff, loading staff and operation manager.
The Author did a great job by describing the equal importance of all the departments of organization to achieve goal and success of products. Organization is like human body if one organ fail to perform the whole body suffer.
