One of the worst and clearest memories of my life is the time when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago. I will never forget my mother’s tears, her falling hair, my sister’s worries and my father’s fear. Still, we are happy to live in the time when breast cancer is considered a preventable disease by the intervention of different screening tools. So, I also remember the smiles and the clear relief my family members felt once everything was over. Now, every time I see a cancer case, I remember our story, which contributed greatly to my passion for public health.
I am applying for this program because I want people to be healthy. I am willing to play a really important, effective, and great role in preventing their tears from the beginning and replace them with a smile of a confident, educated and healthy person. With years of work experience in the field of medicine I realize that we practice public health approach all the time, in all departments and with all patients. We depend very much on the research and epidemiology science in our care management plans with the patients. In other words, public health field is the base of the medical specialties’ pyramid.
Sometimes it seems to me that during my early medical college years, I didn’t feel like I really understood the discipline of community medicine and public health, but at every step in my academic and personal development there were clear indications that this was the fundamental path for me. Now, working with people, who studied medicine in the USA and listening to the experiences of my friends, who studied public health programs, I am getting more and more convinced that I have a strong aspiration to work as a public health practitioner.
Now I have already dedicated three years of my life to medical work and I believe that it is just a beginning. I saw different advanced cases that could be prevented, or at least discovered earlier if we were paying more attention to promotion of public health. At present I work as a physician, which requires being very careful and detail-oriented. I fully realize my responsibility and I understand that ignorance might cost patients their life and happiness.
I also work as a teaching assistant at King Abdulaziz University with a full sponsored scholarship and a fellowship in a sub-specialty of interest. Being an academic, I am paying significant attention to the field of public health, which is the most important way of preventing disease and the first step towards a healthy, intellectual and productive society. Furthermore, I am making sure that my students understand it, enjoy it, and truly learn to appreciate it, because they will move it forward. I interact with them and improve my own knowledge and reflection through learning from their thoughts and ideas.
As for my academic background, I graduated from King AbdulAziz University in 2010 and completed my internship in 2011. At university I learned to study hard and improved my multi-tasking skills. The King Fahd Medical Research Center at the University always impressed me and I got a clear understanding that research and public health should come together and support each other. What is more, I developed computer skills including Microsoft Office and SPSS Statistics in order to spend time more efficiently and optimize the work with large data sets. I am fluent in English and Arabic and therefore I easily communicated with students from different parts of the world. I learned to respect cultural diversity and I really enjoyed studying in a multinational environment.
My experience with community health programs discovered my early passion for counseling and public health as well as it improved my speaking and communicating skills. During my fourth year in medical school, I participated in community service programs that focused on awareness of child abuse and drug abuse, and I truly enjoyed them. During such activities I learned to communicate with different people regardless of their age, position or beliefs. I also learned to deliver important information easily and efficiently and developed a good sense of humor, which helps me prepossess people.
My personal story can be summarized in the words of Buddha that “your work is to discover your work and then with all your heart to give yourself to it”. Working as a physician and treating people I understood that my priority in work is to prevent rather than just to treat. I believe that living and studying in a large multicultural country with huge medical resources will help me expand my knowledge, network, and my language capabilities. I am willing to become a Master in Public Health because this will enhance my personal development, provide me with the experience I need and become a unique opportunity to advance my career. I am strongly convinced that living in a healthy environment is a right rather than a wish and I will do my best to change the world for better.
