Introduction
Media refers to different channels that we use to convey messages and information in the world. We have different types of media e.g. Newspaper, television, magazines, Radio, Film, music and internet. We have different types of media print and visual media.
In the 21st century communication is becoming faster and better. It is important to know how to learn and understand those messages that images convey. It is also vital to know how messages are conveyed and created. This ensures that you don’t get lied to in messages.
Media studies are also about knowing how production of media goes about. This assists one in appreciating the talent of the people involved in the whole production procedure. Learning about the techniques helps you value the effort and creativity of the media message.
Media has changed over time from the old fashioned ways to the technologically up-to-date methods. This is happening due to the current technological, social and political changes.
As I was growing up my family enjoyed reading the newspaper together, there was always something for everyone inside the newspaper. We still share the same interest. Of reading the daily paper that way we know what is happening. It is very unfortunate and am fully aware that the traditional newspaper has changed to online.
Johannes Gutenbergs is the one who invented the printing press in 1440 and spread of the newspaper all over Europe and then eventually to different parts of the world to the current times. At some point it was almost besides Radio the only source of information dissemination thus it shaped peoples thinking and habits.
The traditional printed newspaper which allowed people to work on deadlines, get them edited and sending them to the printing press. This is becoming a redundant idea. With the coming of computers, smart phones and iPods’ which is leading to the death of printed newspaper. We might want to believe that the death of printed media is only happening in the US, UK and Europe, this is not the case it is a worldwide phenomenon though taking place at different paces.
The newspaper concept is not dying what is happening is that the format is now being changed to the digital mode. Thus the newspaper companies are changing with consumer needs and following their preference. After 80 years of printing newspaper, Newsweek closed its print edition and is now digital.
All over the world newspaper production and circulation numbers have been falling drastically, forcing newspaper organizations management to rethink strategies to ensure revenue and profitability. Research has proven that this is happening due technological and social changes for instance high speed internet this is happening in both developed and developing countries.
Challenges to the print media
In the US during the financial crisis of 2007 to 2008 advertising revenues fell that was a very big challenge.
The other reason was the entry of other sources of information dissemination that are both free, efficient and fast. They are in digital form which is easier and quick access to everyone.
Furthermore newspaper has not enjoyed readability of large masses like before since the introduction of the internet. The amount of information the internet provides at the click of a button is measurable and no printed newspaper could match and better even it is updated every now and then as things happen.
The challenge today in the media providers is to look for alternative revenue sustain ace.
Why digital information devices are ruling the roost today
- They ensure that one gets information as it happens and is almost free if not free. It is available on one smart phone, tablets etc.
- One can be able to store documents as soon as their preparation is done.
- future retrieval is easier and less cumbersome
- Interactive one can read and leave a comment or ask a question.
- No turning of pages while reading one article
- They are interactive, which means that they can be read, commented upon and altered quickly..
Expectations of media in the next fifty years
Media is a superpower that keeps people in touch with the world and each other in a lot of ways. Civilization and technology has changed the media platform and will continue to do so as it is also dynamic.
There is no written code of where media future is headed, we can only determine this by following where media has come from. In the instances below future of several types of media predicted over the next fifty years.
How will the following look like in the next fifty years, be made who shall they serve, how shall they be created and published;
- Newspaper
Much is to be said about the newspaper it is slowly moving from print to digital though one thing for sure print media can’t go completely. The printed newspaper shall exist though it shall be of certain people or what we call a niche product just like the vinyl records. In the digital media technology is fast and too innovative thus we expect newspapers online that turn pages as we read. “British newspapers won't die out”, says media commentator Vince Graff, “because they are so portable, easy to use and cheap.”
- Books
These fall under the same category as newspaper.
- Radio
Radio survived the invention of television. It has survived iPods’ and flash disks and computers this is one thing that has a long way to go in terms of survival. Radio’s shall and will always exist only that they shall be integrated with very many other items e.g. DVD players, televisions etc.
- Television
In this gadget since invention only the content and size changes significantly. We shall have paper thick televisions and some we can embed on our watches.
- Magazine
Magazines are better looking and better appreciated in printed format they shall be the same maybe size and print format shall change, otherwise I believe the traditional printed magazine has a lot years to exist.
Conclusion
There is space enough for print and digital media to coexist, and the future media is a bit uncertain. It is not very easy to predict neither is it very easy to ignore what path it is taking. The strengths available for Healthy Foods restaurant over its competitors include a favorable location in an urban and rich street in Boston. With the number of foreign students and tourists continues to increase, this means a growing consumer base for Healthy Foods restaurant.
The weaknesses include the high cost of living in the area especially rent.
