Towson University is regarded to be the safest public institution in Maryland, which is associated with the lowest crime rate. Towson is a safe campus thanks to concerned people’s commitment to personal protection. In order to protect the innocent, Matthew Heimbach decided to found a group called the White Student Union (WSU) in 2012. Although this group is not officially organized, it maintains some crucial ideas. The founder of the WSU advocates for European people to be superior, insisting on their culture being unique. The central idea he pursues in the media is that it is essential to preserve and develop the ethnic and cultural identity.
Matthew Heimbach and his followers stand for peace in the community and want to make sure that everyone is safe. It is vital for people to take care of themselves and promote justice in the society. Besides, the strengths of the central idea are supported by the group’s eagerness to help the community and the whole nation. Personal protection is prioritized, as it is vital to save people from criminal activity at Towson University. As Matthew claims, “the frequent robberies, sexual assaults, and acts of vandalism are not often reported in the local media” (Heimbach).
Another strong side of ethnic and cultural identity is revealed in identitarianism which describes people who believe that “whiteness is worth celebrating as much as blackness or any other identity” (Enzinna). The supporters regard this concept as a positive ideology and stress the ability to feel proud of their own race. The founder of the WSU also advocates for the best interests of white Americans due to the right to provide a better future for their children.
The other side of identitarianism explains the “racial realist” ideology foregrounded by Jared Taylor. He determines race as the source of tension and conflict due to the diversity of ethnicity and culture. What is more, the ideologist makes correlations between the race and intelligence, pointing out superiority of one ethnicity over another. The weakness of Matthew Heimbach’s central idea is that it supports the racial realist ideology, but he does not say publicly about his racism. “He resents being classified as a ‘racist’ or ‘white supremacist’ (Enzinna). No one knows how he actually feels about it, because he tends to be politically correct.
The WSU is juxtaposed by the Black Student Union (BSU) at the university. In fact, most students at Towson University are white, and African Americans feel left behind. In the media, the BSU insists that people are truly equals. There also exist diversity groups on campus who come together and feel proud of communicating together, but they huddle up against Matthew Heimbach’s group who considers all crime as a problem.
The majority of people who commit crimes in the Towson area are black, to the WSU’s mind. Black Towson students belong to the minority group, and as Matthew feels, black crime wave continues. It is the reason why his group has been conducting crime patrols on campus, searching for “black predators” since 2013. Males travel together at night to observe their surroundings and to attempt to stop crimes if they witness them (Heimbach). Besides, this search correlates with offensive messages sent to black people via Facebook. Such conduct is explained by the fact that “Matthew has become the pasty public face of campus hate” (Enzinna).
