Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPAA) is an act, enacted by the U.S. government during the tenure of Bill Clinton in 2006.This act enables a person to file a complaint through specific guidelines if a certain entity fails to administer their services properly as provided by the law. Being the one receiving the complaints for the Department of Health and Human Services, directing each case to the department is a vital key. A case such as an employee of Veteran affairs accuses fellow employee of stealing Vets’ names and social security numbers and selling them, would be reported to the FBI for further investigation and to department of Federal Identity Theft Task Force. This is necessary since the intention of the buyers may be identity theft. In the case of breach of unsecured PHI, efforts to notify The Federal Trade Commission will be in order. When it comes to person being denied the rights to past medical records, I forward it to OCR (Office of Civil Rights).
