Article Summary: Distilling the Facts for Your Boss
Based on your request, I am submitting this summary of the article will discuss how one can manage the impact on others through suitable behavior. The article explained the problems that were encountered by Howard, who was a hardworking and skillful person, but due to his behavior in the office setting, the reception of his colleagues is that he was autocratic and bad mannered in nature. Even though Howard always provided the right and proper opinion, the manner of delivering it was insensitive which led to disrespect of his colleagues. Oftentimes, Howard was self-centered and wants all the attention to himself. He was always advised to give his opinions graciously and with respect to others.
Behaviors and Impacts
It bears stressing that being overly argumentative in order highlight personal opinion will tend to draw away colleagues and avoid opening conversations. Failure to choose the appropriate words when conversing with colleagues will not promote camaraderie in the workplace. When an employee fails to control his or her emotions in the work place, there is a tendency that he or she may lose control by screaming during discussions in order to prove a point. This behavior will cause a negative impact on one’s colleagues since they will be terrified by such attitude and diminish the positive and creative energy within the workplace. Failure to listen to the opinions of other people and insist that your own opinion is the correct one will not be beneficial for business. The outlook of every employee should not undermine the power and content of argument (Pilot 10).
Recommendation of Strategies to be Considered
It is highly recommended to increase self-awareness in a person by gathering direct feedback of other’s people’s perception of you. It is best to set up open communication lines by giving every one the chance to express his or her opinion and to listen to what others have to say regarding the issue on hand. Listening is the key to an effective communication, instead of abruptly stopping them to express their opinions. There is no room for assumptions in the workplace since decisions are to be made based on facts. Keeping the communication lines open all the time will lead to successful understanding of the entire working group. It shall be the responsibility of the leaders to promote good facilitation skills to promote interaction among subordinates. Emphasis should be made on the similarity of impact and intention as part of the process of interaction. Overall, the article is relevant and concise in its expression. The article was able to inspire job seekers to reach for their dreams as long as they maintain the proper decorum in the work place and follow the company policies on ethical behavior (Goldstein 4).
