The institutional affiliation
Despite the facts on deep historical roots, the issue of discrimination is considered to be a high priority problem at present. It is surprising how much often racism still occurs, especially in the countries having high living standards and perspectives for good education and successful career.
Unfortunately, in metropolitan cities non-residents often face the emotional immaturity expressed in anger and rage. An example of emotional immaturity was observed at Mercer University. Some doors of the dorm were defaced with racial epithet by some vandals ("Mercer University dorm defaced with racial epithet", 2016). This situation became a real slur on the reputation of the University, which is deemed to be a racial diverse educational establishment.
The given situation includes three key actors, namely, the offensive side, the offended one and the one who strives for justice. No one can excuse the actions of vandals trying to defend themselves and the borders of their country in such way. However, in the modern world the notion of borders is so blurred and the whole world is cosmopolitan. Thus, I am deeply convinced that people have to be more tolerant to each other.
Mercer’s President Bill Underwood has already done various steps to increase interracial ethics. However, this challenge has not changed aggressive mood of any individuals. Theoretically, the reasons for aggression can be a set of stereotypes of a certain nation or culture, desire to dominate, lack of empathy, and furthermore, political situation, as well as economic and social insecurity. In my opinion, an alternative solution of the current situation would be a possibility to have a talk with the peace-breakers about the causes of their actions. It would be also important to involve psychologists, law representatives, as well as organize a kind of peace talks between the two sides. So, the main advantage of these actions could be considered the awakening of the understanding of equality and tolerance among different nationalities. The downside of this solution in turn can be a forced confession and covert aggression.
There are also some more fundamental actions to be done. For instance, a 24-hour helpline which can give any advice and psychological help or low centers offering free legal advice and aid. In colleges and universities, first and foremost, there should be some courses on cultural difference and ethics; as a result, the students will be educated about the peculiarities of each race. At the same time, it is necessary to educate the international students about the country they arrived. Additionally, increasing emotional intelligence on both sides will give its positive results.
In general, the course of action should be taken to peace living and the interrelationship of all nations regardless of the geographical location.
