Everybody around the world knows Steve Jobs. This is why his success, his company and his life were all focused by the public. His famous period is when he introduced the iPhone 4 to the world. It is the most sought after mobile phone in the world and is now considered as a symbol of fashion and status. So because the iPhone 4 was such a huge hit, it should not be a surprise to anyone if it is sold twice its cost. And no matter what the retailers are asking for this phone, consumers are willing to buy it at any price. Steve jobs has thus influenced millions of lives and therefore many try to follow in his footsteps to achieve the same level of success and appreciation. They follow the life story of their icon to make all their dreams come true.
According to the Steve Jobs Stanford commencement in 2005, I found his advice of suggesting people to do what they love was very useful and reasonable for today’s students (Jobs). Steve Jobs has been successful in not only convincing the multicultural students of Stanford, but also to the students around the world to excel in life by conveying 3 very simple and personal stories from his life.
It is even more realistic for today’s students because of the huge opportunities we now have. The world has learned to accept a person for whatever he wants to do. I believe in Steve Jobs’s advice and I feel the reason behind his uncountable achievement is that he sticks to his goal. We can see an example of this when he was fired by his own company Apple. He never gave his dream up. Steve Jobs regarded failure as a new chapter in his career. He got up, dusted himself and started again. He then created groundbreaking successful organizations like NeXT and Pixar. Moreover, he led the two companies into becoming the top companies in their respective genres. His dream and faith persuaded him to continue working in the digital field even after what he experienced. This example sufficiently explains that when somebody fails, if only he himself insists on what he wants to do, he will shine again in any way possible. He has successfully used situations from his personal live as well as invented ethos that every student in the world can relate to.
The merits of Steve Jobs’s advice and following your dream are many. Steve Jobs’s advice to not to settle on something you do not love has a huge impact on the way I perceive things. It has made me understand the importance of my own decisions and how to stand up for something I believe in. The success rate is higher if you know that you are responsible for the consequences you have chosen for yourself. It is my belief that you are never given a wish without also having been given the power to make it come true.
Steve Jobs’s advice is credible according to his personal experience as well. It is important to understand that Steve Jobs’s glory cannot be copied by everyone, but we can conclude it and listen to his advice to avoid mistakes. Also, he guides us to consider the importance of adhering to a dream. I feel that that there are two ways to look at anything. It doesn’t matter even if you make millions from a job that you hate doing. You will not get the inner satisfaction. Yet, if your profession and your dream are the same, you can experience satisfaction that not many people in the world know about.
Therefore, when your job is doing what you are really excited about, you will feel passionate, energetic and even raise your chances of getting success quicker than others. You will be willing to put in more effort and time into something you love this reaping better fruit. There is nothing better than to have complete satisfaction with whatever you do and whatever you have in life. This idea is supported by Steve Jobs’s insight.
One thing all successful people have in common is they work to make their dream come true and they never give up on it. The most important thing is insisting on the dream and then you can see the magic happen. Take the example of JK Rowling, according to “The Fringe benefits of failure, and the importance of imagination”, JK Rowling also in order to finish her dream of writing novels, ignored her parents’ wish and chose ‘Classics’ as a major (Rowling). Her parents wanted her to attend college and support them. They thought that by choosing Classics, JK Rowling may not be able to find jobs and won’t be socially accepted.
She even faced a few years of being unsure of her future. She did not have any money and did not know which direction in life to choose. But she still was happy and upbeat. Then she finally realized her dream of being a writer. If JK Rowling had been obedient to her parents initially, we would never have had the chance to read “Harry Potter”, and the world would have lost such an outstanding and amazing writer. Before we see the first light of morning, we must walk through the place of brambles in the dark.
Another way to look at Steve Jobs’s advice is that the timing also needs to be right. We should do what we love but the right time should be considered as a precondition. I have recently learned this by examining a life experience of my close friend. Shania had a knick for food, especially baked goods. But life did not give her the opportunity to practice this as her career. She got married right after high school and had other priorities like kids and family. But deep down she always wanted to become a professional baker. So once her children were old enough to go to school and she settled all her home priorities, she enrolled in a special baking course. It was a slow but steady journey from there to her little bakery around the corner of her street. If Shania would have prioritized her dream of becoming a baker in the start, then her married life would have been a mess and her kids would not have been so supportive. Now she has a loving family and her dream job altogether. High school or any other formal education center should be a basis for finding out what you want to do with your life. It should be a place to realize your dreams. And once you know what your dream is, gain the proper knowledge in the right time and then pursue it. Blindly jumping into something you know nothing about will not help you pursue your dream. Never give up on your dream but setting priorities is important. Timing is key here.
Steve Jobs’s advice is extremely sound for today’s students. No matter if you listen to Steve Jobs or JK Rowling, they are both excellent in their fields regarding having faith in what you love and do what you love. If you follow your heart at the right timing, you will be genuinely happy. The fear of failure and darkness will be seized and you can reach to new heights of success. If you have the will to win; you can achieve anything. Always remember that the whole world will help you when you set your heart and soul on achieving something. Steve’s advice is not something new but it has always been inside our hearts but he had the courage to say it out loud. In my opinion, Steve Jobs did a commendable job in removing the age old conception that money equals happiness from the minds of today’s students.
