Microsoft Word is a word processor that is developed by Microsoft. The first ever version of Microsoft Word was released in 1983 and since the company has launched endless versions. The Microsoft Word was lately differentiated with the launch of free editions of word online with the commercial desktop version. The free online versions have different features as compared to the commercial version.
Features that exists in the Commercial version and not in Word Online
Microsoft Word Online opens documents in the formats such as dotx, docx, Word Macro-Enabled Document (.docm) but macros cannot be accessed and also .doc documents can be accessed. The Word Online documents are displayed in these formats, but when it is required to edit these documents, the Word Online saves a new copy in the format of dotx or docx but not in the format of .dot or.doc. This feature is available in commercial Microsoft Word. Word Online cannot access documents in other file formats such as HTML, MHTML, and Rich Text Format (RTF) (Office Online, p.1).
The Word Online has a feature to correct the common typing mistakes of the writer for example; it is able to correct the words that are typed wrong like it can change “af” to “of.” If the Word Online makes such correction that, a writer does not want, he can press Ctrl+Z to undo it. On the other hand, the commercial Microsoft Word application has an AutoCorrect option that is not provided by the Word Online (Office Online, p.1).
When we analyze the picture and clip art tool, the features vary between commercial Microsoft Word and Word Online. In online word, the feature is that a user can insert pictures that are saved on his computer and insert clip art as well. These pictures then can be edited using different picture styles, text can be written on them; the size can be changed but the pictures cannot be moved to a new location through dragging. Instead, it is required that the user should use the key of Ctrl+X to cut and then Ctrl+V to paste to the new location. The advanced features such as cropping the picture or clip art are unavailable in Word Online. The screenshots cannot be created with Word Online but the feature is available to display screenshots in the document as pictures (Office Online, p.1).
Features that exists in Word Online and not in the Commercial version
One of the most significant features of Word Online is that it is free to use unlike the commercial version that requires paid product with advanced features. The Word Online can be used on all the personal computers without having to pay any additional amount or subscribing to Microsoft service for the Office product. Since the Word Online is free to use and can be loaded on any device such as Linux PC to iPads and other tablets as well. It will also load on browsers such as Safari, Firefox, and Chrome and not just the Microsoft supported Internet Explorer (How to Geek, p.1).
The Word Online version of the Microsoft Office provides better collaboration features as compared to the commercial Microsoft Word. For example, when the collaboration is done between people in commercial Microsoft Word latest version of Word 2013, only one person is able to edit the paragraph once at a time. On the other hand, the Word Online offers real-time editing allowing multiple users to edit the same one paragraph simultaneously (How to Geek, p.1).
