The Pearl Harbor Naval Complex is widely known of December 7, 1941 attack made by Japanese army. Long time had passed since the accident, but people and participants remember it as a nightmare. The years of reconstruction brought a lot of innovations and upgrades to Pearl Harbor Naval Complex and today we can see perfectly developed and established network of various Units. The overall goal of Pearl Harbor Complex is too broad to be given a certain definition, but explaining in detail responsibilities of each Unit - will help understand the true nature and approach of it.
Transient Personnel Unit (TPU)
The direct mission of TPU at Pearl Harbor is to work with the personnel assigned to a certain location or mission. Taking into consideration the scope of responsibilities of TPU it might not be considered as a military unit; however all the departments operate in a military and disciplined manner to ensure the fastest transition for every personnel deployed. According to Navy Personnel Command (2013), “TPU is responsible for the efficient and expeditious processing of all transient personnel assigned and the operation of the disciplinary barracks.”
Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit (CBMU)
The commonly used name for CBMU is “Seabees”. It is considered to be one of the “oldest” units established at Pearl Harbor. Since the Vietnam War “Seabees” have been applying their combat-ready engineers to support any missions assigned to field units. To point out the core responsibility of the unit – we can refer to Blueprint (2012), which states : “Maintain and equip naval construction forces to provide supported commanders with expeditionary engineering forces capable of general engineering and construction, and limited combat engineering across the full range of military operations”
Naval Facilities Engineering Command Unit (NAVFAC)
“NAVFAC is the Systems Command that builds and maintains sustainable facilities, delivers utilities and services, and provides Navy expeditionary combat force capabilities” (Naval Facilities Engineering Command Strategic Plan, 2013) There are a lot of problems at this moment with the unit due to lack of Governmental financing, but the Strategic Plan shows the spirit and precisely established priorities to follow. NAVFAC is a crucial unit to be based at Pearl Harbor Naval Complex.
Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Unit (SPAWAR)
The unit is established to coordinate, operate and deliver national security through IT sphere. Referring to Federal Business Council, Inc. (2013) "SPAWAR`s mission is to deliver FORCE net: invent, acquire, develop, deliver and support integrated & interoperable C4ISR, business IT and space capabilities in the interest of national defense. SPAWAR Intec Training provides training to DoD military and civilian personnel to obtain leading IT Industry Certifications.”
Mobile Diving Salvage Unit (MDSU)
As Logico (2010) argues in his research, “MDSU 1 provides combat ready, expeditionary, rapidly deployable Mobile Diving and Salvage (MDS) Companies to conduct harbor clearance, salvage, underwater search and recovery, and underwater emergency repairs in any environment. Currently, MDSU 1 has 124 divers and 47 non-diver support personnel serving its command.”
Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU)
The unit mostly consists of troops, sailors and marines. This unit remains to be one of the most mobile and steady to get into the fight during war time. Combining air and land maneuvers enables reaching needed point within the shortest time frame. Transcontinental deployments require readiness and willingness for “on-order” start to any location.
In order to summarize – we might say that through years the vast experience and professional approach enabled the Pearl Harbor Naval Complex not only to renovate, but install the “city-worth” communication, business and military organization to protect, ensure and improve the future of every single US citizen.
