WeChat, for example, not only allows users to send text and voice messages but also allows them to send money, via connected bank accounts, to others. Similarly, Line, in addition to messaging, it allows companies to send users discount stickers if they follow the company’s Line account. On the one hand, users have a discount; on the other hand, the company acquires the ability to directly communicate with the user in the future. Uber, on the other hand, while it is not a pure mobile messaging company like WeChat or Line, it does operate strictly through mobile messaging as riders and driver can only communicate with one another via their smartphones or tablets. The key element that allows WeChat, Line, and Uber, the companies to what in the future is that they make use of mobile messaging technology not only as the new, and leading form of communication but also as a platform to make money of things that have little to actually do with communicating.
