MONEY AND BANKING
The Coca Cola is a public company that was founded by Asa Candler in 1892 (Murden, T. 2005). This beverage manufacturing company whose head quarters are based at Atlanta, Georgia is quoted at the prestigious New York Stock Exchange. As a multinational, it operates in over 200 countries. This seems lucrative making it get annual revenue of US $. 35.119 (2010).
As a result of the transitional trends in the global market, this company has been heavily affected by the international policies regarding the operations of businesses. These are policies that have been formulated by the United Nations (UN), international trade organizations, individual state governments and the civil society. All these are for the regulations that are aimed at creating a healthy business environment.
Today, it has become the role of the international community to sensitize the general society about sustainable environment and environmental conservation (Krugman, P.R. 2003). For instance, it is a primary role of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNDP) to lobby for an environmental friendly investments world over. This has been a contentious issue in the environmental summits like the Kyoto and Copenhagen conferences.
Actually, UNDP advocates for the avoidance of environmental pollution through the discharge of harmful wastes to the water bodies. Instead, it insists that such discharges should first undergo a vigorous chemical treatment before they are discharged.
However, Coca Cola has been accused for violating this directive. Several law suits have been filed against it for discharging harmful wastes to the environment. For instance, in 2003 it was taken to the court by the Indian NGO, Centre for Science and Environment for releasing harmful products that damaged agricultural land and caused cancer (Murden, T. 2005). This prompted a lot of laboratory tests that were later unsuccessfully concluded in 2008.
Besides, the Coca Cola Company has been accused of the overuse of the local water and the use of harmful packaging materials. This led to another law suit filed in 2009 by the US consumer group: the Centre for Science in the Public Interest. Such cases have been as a result of the violation of the international laws governing the conduct of industries as far as the environmental sustainability is concerned.
Question 2
E-Commerce is a kind of business practices carried out though the internet (Krugman, P.R. 2003). On the other hand, globalization is the bringing together of people from all corners of the world. Of course the above policies have impacted in the world trade. E-commerce has become so prominent and people are trading knowing clearly what to do concerning the environmental conservation. They can acquire such information in the internet. Hence, it’s clear that the use of international policies in business directly affects globalization and e-commerce.
