On most days I tend to eat two proper meals a day. I eat these at around 8am and 7pm, and then I have smaller snacks throughout the day. For breakfast I eat a healthy, low fat cereal. In the evening, however, I often eat a meal heavy in carbohydrates such as pasta or pizza. I am not very good at having my five fruit and vegetables a day. My snacks during the day are a combination of healthy foods such as chick peas and unhealthy foods such as chocolate. At night, my snacks are almost always chocolate as I feel I need the rewards in order to do lots of work.
If I am spending time with friends I might make more of an effort to have a proper lunch, but not usually. I then often snack while I am working in the evenings, sometimes as late as 2am. I try to drink a lot of water, usually about six pints per day, though often I have that in the form of blackcurrant squash or similar. I am unsure as to whether or not that makes a difference to the water I am taking in.
In terms of changes, I feel that I need to stop snacking late at night and try to eat a proper lunch rather than eating unhealthy pieces of convenient food throughout the day. Additionally, I feel that the chocolate habit needs to be curbed and the rule of five fruit and vegetable servings per day should always be adhered to.
The plan on the My Pyramid website contrast a fair bit with my current diet. Currently I have milk on my cereal but do not drink any other than that. According to the plan, I should be having three cups per day. As I don’t eat meat, the plan says I should be eating six ounces of beans a day. I certainly do not think I am doing this. The fruit and vegetables are broken down separately, into cups. The plan says I should be having three cups of vegetables and two cups of fruit per day. I assume this equates to normal servings of fruit and vegetables.
Over all, it appears that I am not getting enough of any of the food groups listed on the My Pyramid diet plan, created especially for me. I certainly do plan on making some changes for the better. I will put start ensuring that I have three vegetable servings and two pieces of fruit per day. This is known to important for everyone’s health and so I am determined to get on board with it. I will also make sure that my protein intake increases. I am used to not eating meat but I am aware that I am missing out on the goodness that it provides, so I need to make more of an effort to eat alternatives.
I am, however, slightly dubious of a website that encourages giving sweetened products to children rather than organic fruit. Furthermore, the site encourages buying imported fruit and vegetables rather than locally produced, organic versions and, again, this makes me dubious of its credibility. Therefore, although I will take on board the more obvious changes that I need to make to my diet, I will not be relying on My Pyramid for a solid plan of action.
