The film is an illuminating illustration of the dearth of ethical and legal frameworks of operations in some businesses. While the case is an extreme exaggeration, it nonetheless presents some ethical and legal issues that current industry players fail to observe. This paper shall discuss some of the legal and ethical issues that surface and briefly recommend the ways to go about solving these issues. However, before proceeding to the issues, it is essential to address the two questions presented at the end of the film. The questions are what one would have done as the CEO instead of kidnapping children to get energy and whether the actions by Sully and Mike could be interpreted as whistleblowing. For the first question, as the CEO I would have pursued cleaner sources of energy such as solar energy. Indeed, solar energy remains in abundance and the amounts remain unexhausted. The other advantage in solar energy is the fact that it is renewable and therefore as a source of energy does not get depleted. In addition to solar energy, I would have pursued other forms of energy such as green energy derived from corn. The use of energy from plants is justified if it prevents the harming of humanity. In fact, in the case of Monsters Inc. the use of children is the worst offence to humanity that can ever happen.
Secondly, on the question of whistleblowing, although the literature on whistleblowing remains scanty on what exactly constitutes whistleblowing, it is essential to consider the overall spirit in whistleblowing. Ideally, the main intention is to prevent the perpetration of unethical and or illegal things in the workplace. To that extent, the actions by Mike and Sully correctly fall under the category of whistleblowing. It should thus be appreciated that the two are some of the modern forms of whistleblowers. By recording the CEO’s statements as to the kidnapping of close to 1000 thousand children, it becomes clear that the CEO is unethical and perpetrates what constitutes criminal activities. It is these that save Boo and other children who would have been the victims of the said illegality.
With the foregoing discussion, the ensuing parts shall canvass some of the legal and ethical issues that surface during the operations of Monsters Inc. To begin with, the company’s own mission statement is a testament to its unethical operations. The company believes in scaring which they say they do because they care. “We scare because we care”, slogan is unethical. It shows the operating premise of the company that is largely devoid of any ethical considerations. It believes in causing fear in the market. This approach is unethical for its does not afford players a level playing field that is competitive and free. It conquers the market players and makes them prisoners of the services of the company. That the company purports to care is far-fetched and a negation of its own operational premise.
Secondly an ethical issue that equally has a legal repercussion is the practice of kidnapping children. The ethical issue lies in the fact that the children are used as sources of energy and in turn harmed in the process. The CEO and his crew are full aware of the consequences on the children’s wellbeing on using them as sources of energy. However, in the interests of their own pursuits, they chose to sacrifice the children and went ahead with extraction of energy. In addition, the CEO has admitted that he is ready to kidnap as much as 1000 children for the purpose of obtaining energy. This approach does not apply the much appreciated triple bottom line that considers the tripartite interests. These are people, profits and planet. As it stands out Monsters Inc. are interested in pursuing only the profits and are ready to sacrifice the people and the planet. This approach is largely unethical and should be opposed with as much energy as possible. On that context, the efforts by Mike and Sully are much appreciated and need to be encouraged even further.
Secondly, the issue of kidnapping is in itself illegal. Kidnapping a person constitutes denying the person freedoms ordinarily conferred on him by virtue of being human. This concept in itself is an affront to basic human rights and is thus not only illegal but unethical. This problem is compounded by the fact that the CEO is in cooperation with the Child Detection Agency. He attempts to malign the persons of Sully and Mike so as to get away with the illegalities. In addition, he uses the same Child Detection Agency to get children including Boo who is the victim in this case. This unilateral abuse of agencies is regrettable. It shows the unethical applications of organizations in which businesses collude with the agencies that ought to regulate them.
All these problems could be avoided if the characters and the organizations as the stakeholders elect to walk the path of ethical and legal regulatory observations. For instance, as suggested previously it is not the case that energy sources have been depleted. It is indeed still possible to harness energy from clean sources that do not harm humanity and the planet. In that context, it is advisable that Monsters Inc. use clean energy from the sun (read solar energy) and or other sources such as corn energy which is renewable. Secondly, the Child Detection Agency must live to play its intended role. It should protect the interests of the children rather that threaten their very interests. In that context, the Agency should have a code of professional ethics that would guide their operations and see to it that their employees conduct themselves beyond reproach. It is also necessary to provide a clear whistleblower policy. This should be within the reach and comprehension of the employees. The whistleblower policy should provide clearly that the employees’ rights and privileges are not lost by virtue of bringing into light unethical practices in the organization. This would be helpful in preventing the occurrence of such unethical activities.
In conclusion, this paper appreciates the need for an ethical practice for the modern organization. With the complexity in businesses and the ever increasing competition, it has become necessary to have checks and balances within and outside the organizations to see to it that ethical practices are observed. In addition, despite the challenges in the market, organizations are encouraged to approach business relations with the triple bottom line mindset. This is to the extent that the planet, the profits and the people have to be considered without comprising of any of them. Lastly, it is the responsibility of employees to bring to the attention of the public unethical practices in play.
