After the university entrance exam, in 2006, I was working in a medical company as a salesperson for the sales division, for about three months. Although I had not studied business before, this became both the beginning of my interest on the subject and the entrance on the business world.
The following year, I came up with a plan in which I could sell the gains I had acquired from online gaming to somebody who needed it. After 2 days, I decided to get outside feedback; so, I searched for people who had at least one month experience in online gaming. In the meantime, I collected some data on the website and, with this information, I could polish up my plan a little more.
I searched for some Korean broker's contacts and sent them an e-mail with my plan, along with some questions about the whole operation to some of them. A few days later, one of them responded, evaluating my plan. I could, then, negotiate with them in Korea, given that I had studied both Chinese and Korean, from primary school to university. Thus, having negotiated with them, I not only easily passed their admission, but also acquired the qualification to trade with the Korean broker's agent.
However, I faced a big problem: I did not have enough money to implement my plan. Although I was just 21-years-old, I did not give it up, even knowing it might fail. Therefore, I thought of some of my close friends and successfully persuaded them to join my plan. I began my first own actual business.
Another business experience I had was when I majored in International Trade in my 2nd year. Lehman Brothers and other important financial institutions failed, the crisis hit a key point, which led to a big financial crisis in the U.S, and also involving other countries, despite the use of financial or monetary policy; Greece is one known example.
I performed a full research on what happened, how it happened and why it happened. I collected the information from relevant economy sources, like TV news and financial broadcasts, newspapers, internet and magazines.
According to the collected data of my research, I discovered a very interesting phenomenon: that much of the recession cases had one common characteristic, which was the lowering of the currency credit on such country, facing financial crisis.
Investors would intend to exchange the currency they had for gold to avoid the imminent and progressive devaluation of the currency; this happened because gold is the safest investment, with a guarantee of good market price, which might be rising during the recession. I decisively invested in stocks for a mining company (a corporation named Shan Dong Huang Jin) at Shanghai’s stock market. At that time, Chinese central government adopted monetary policies that would stimulate economy growth, in order to avoid getting into the economy collapse, which lead to set the price to rise. In addition, my investment was based on the fact that I considered the goal price not to be easily controlled by personal or financial institutions, since gold trading is controlled by a set of different markets, such as New York, London etc. As a consequence, the stock price doubled, compared to the original price, giving back the profit I planned to have with such investment.
Looking back, it was an amazing experience. I learned much about the business and financial worlds; but two lessons stood out of all this:
The first was that, at the time, my operation only continued for half a year, although I did earn some money with low labor price and my language skills. Later, I realized that I had not planned a clear strategy all the way, which led to some mistakes. I had not shaped the scale in the local market; I had not analyzed my competitors in my area that influenced my share on the market, losing the ability to control it. In the meantime, I never analyzed environmental elements of overseas markets. More and more products of online gaming appeared in Korea, so I had to negotiate with more Korean brokers’ agents. The other reason for decreasing my profits was Won`s (Korean currency) exchange rate rise. The fundamental causes of mistakes are my limitation in knowledge of structure. Since then, I have worked hard in my major and read different kinds of books for extra information in my extra time. I positively attended various activities and also was elected as president of student council of our university; moreover, I experienced internship in our local government before graduating university. All of this opened up my horizons.
The second case was an eye-opener. I improved my ability for collecting important information and picked up my judgment. I realized that knowledge is very powerful to establish a plan and fully see the big picture. I devoted myself to analyzing business models and watch the invitation product and service. I experienced price fluctuations in stock markets that I had only ever felt playing soccer. Indeed, I realized I was getting ready for more complex investment plans. I want one that excites me and takes me to a place of more knowledge and power.
This realization completely simplified all my future choices. For me, it was an adventure, but also the conscience of my life goals.
