After re-reading the article, I have realized that my critical analysis of the paper previously was very shallow. There were some very important parts of the article that I never included in the essay. Formerly, I emphasized heavily on the challenges Tan faced as an immigrant leaving out those that her mother faced due to her poor language.
Tan’s mother was not very fluent with her language. However, she had to struggle to communicate with Tan and others which turned out to be very hectic. Tan describes her mother’s language as “Broken” yet agrees her mother was one of the best speakers even though some people said they never understood what she was talking about. According to other people, it was like Tan’s mother was speaking the pure Chinese language. Many people not only Tan’s mother in the United States pass through these challenges. Recently, I was watching a certain video clip where there was a certain woman in an American shopping mall arguing with a Spanish immigrant on what language should be spoken in the United States. The Spanish was speaking in Romance language, which according to me was not wrong. However, according to the woman in the shopping mall, she was supposed to speak in English. The result was that she got improper services in the mall the same way Tan’s mother used to get in hospitals and with the stockbroker.
Finally, I have learned that many Chinese students in the United States are facing a big challenge while choosing their career. Tan talks about the challenges she faced while choosing her major. At one moment, due to what her teacher described as “broken” and “limited” English, she was discouraged from taking English as her major. However, due to her dedication and belief that she can disapprove assumptions made about her, Tan work tirelessly to meet her dreams. She started off by writing fictions, which I believe worked well for her. From the reading, I have learned that however much challenges we face, we must always have dedication, vision, and mission and never let other people’s opinions derail our dreams.
