Introduction
There is a major difference between the modern workplace and workplaces of 50 years ago.
Therefore, employers face a great level of challenges to motivate their employees in today’s work climate. Some of the challenges of motivating employees in the present work environment include managing diversity, needs for fast growth, and increasing mobility.
Challenges
Firstly, modern employees not only expect the best compensation, they also want the organization to provide them with training and development opportunities frequently. When employees are not given adequate learning opportunities, they are expected to feel disappointed and employers find it tough to motivate them in delivering their best. This was not a major challenge for employers 50 years ago.
Secondly, mobility has become an essential aspect of keeping employees happy. Especially among the Millennials, mobility is seen as an attractive motivation tool. When organizations fail to provide mobility opportunities, it is expected that employees might feel demotivated and seek employment at another form. Mobility was not a regular practice 50 years ago, and several employees used to work during their employment term in an organization.
Thirdly, today’s workplaces are made up of employees hailing from different cultures, religion, nationalities, sex, etc. Employees might feel demotivated when they work in an organization that does not follow the standard rules of accepting diversity as a natural result of years of migration. Also, employees can feel demotivated if the organization promotes or hires employees of a particular sex, leading many of the opposite sex to feel discouraged with their chances to succeed.
Conclusion
Some of the challenges that are presented to employers in today’s workplace are mobility, diversity, and growth opportunities. These challenges were not faced by employers 50 years ago.
