My admiration and inspiration for choosing immunology resulted from a book by Lauren M. Sompayrac on how the immune system works. I was fascinated with the basic mechanism for the human immune system and its ability to produce antibodies that fight toxins as well as reduce allergy cases. Intellectual curiosity regarding immunology deepened when completing my graduation project “Computers, Keyboard and Mice Contamination at ICU,” that resulted in a significant policy change at several healthcare institutions in my country. The project’s strong results eventually led to our paper being published in the Journal of Critical Care (October 2011, Volume 26, Issue 5, Pages e38‐e39).
My goal as a scientist is to become an assistant professor who creates a productive learning environment that gives students a “first-class” education. Fulfilling this academic position allows access to a facility that provides an opportunity to lead and conduct research in immunology and infectious control. Working hand-and-hand with other scientists through national and international collaborations will enable me to contribute to the improvement of healthcare services worldwide. Therefore, I clearly envision my plan, and after graduation will work internationally with American professors again. By obtaining admission into UW’s prestigious MD/PhD Program, the goal will become a reality.
Wanting to captivate every learning opportunity and experience related to immunology, I attended the Rheumatology Clinic, which allowed me to directly see various cases and how doctors deal with them. I learned a lot about disease status and areas of improvement that can be applied in my country.
UW’s MSTP program is nationally known for educating its students to become highly skilled, competent, and compassionate healthcare professionals for diverse communities. Its specialized program in immunology, intensive curriculum and research facilities provide a well-rounded educational experience that leads to excellence in “clinical skills, professionalism and patient-centered care.” I am determined, dedicated, and driven to realize my dream; and provided the opportunity, I will rise to meet all academic challenges at your university and become a graduate that the University of Washington can be proud of.
