The raging competition between the salesmen of the real estate that takes place in New York is marred with dishonesty as they attempt to outwit one another. A prize has been placed on the best leads. The promise of winning a prize is too tempting for the best two sellers. However, the threat of getting sacked if you happen to fail to emerge on top two is too hard to handle. Nobody wants to be the last in the competition and everyone tries to emerge the winner. Schemes soon set in the business which has been male dominated. Several incidences ensue when Moss, Roma, Lavene, and Aaronow begin to hatch plans to impress their supervisor Williamson. They have the task of selling the undesirable real estate which is already inflated to get the best leads. It is critical to understand that when the company bosses declared the sales contest, the compounding situation set in among the salesmen who must live up to the set standards or face the sack. Nobody intends to be sacked and as such must work to meet the solid target leads. It is important to note that winning the Cadillac became a reality only for the best sellers. The company used a chalkboard to keep track of the sales recorded by the company’s salesmen. Roma outwits the colleagues and emerges as the lead seller, but that does not go well with others who are increasingly getting under pressure for the fear of getting sacked. The value of losing the job is too hard to contemplate. Everybody tries the tactic that can best work for them and Lavene attempts to have Williamson on his side by convincing him that he should be given better leads to give him the chance to close on sales.
However, the trick does not work as Williamson is too hard to convince as his love for the company does not allow him to bend the company policy. Aaronow and Moss are contemplating breaking into the office to steal the good leads, so that they could sell it to their former colleague, Graff, who is now running his business in a wiser way. There is no chance of letting the idea go as Moss is determined to see the plans through. He vows to carry it himself if Aaronow fails to act. When Roma gets the client, Lingk, he faces a plethora of challenges as robbery happens. Roma’s uncertainty about the filing of the contract he sold to Lingk builds up. He’s uncertain about the contract, thus he comes hurriedly on the news that a robbery has happened to the company. Williamson gives him the assurance that it had been filed before the robbery. However, as interrogation continues, Lavene confronts Williamson about the contract and asserts that it had not been filed. Williamson thus concludes that it is only possible that Lavene conducted the robbery hence orders for his arrest. However, it does not take long before Roma is taken to task when Lingk comes to cancel the deal under the advice of the wife. He gives him the assurance that all is well since the contract had not been filed. However, Williamson tells Lingk not to worry since the contract had been filed before the incident. The statements contradicted the ones given by Roma thus making Lingk read a scam. Furious at the move by Williamson, Roma lets loose a fouled-mouth over what he thinks attempts by Williamson to ruin his prospects. Roma should learn that previous success does not bear any relevance to the future and that time is a determinant factor in every endeavor. Lavene becomes an imminent failure who is caught in the pride of his youthful success, but cannot replicate that at this time as he continuously grapples with bad luck in every attempt to succeed. He’s found a new client, but the deal fails mysteriously. His clients are Nyborgs who are considered notorious deadbeats. Williamson has no confidence in their cheques thus is skeptical about seeing the deal through. It adds to the other misfortunes he has faced in the entire business endeavor, including being arrested for plotting the robbery. Additionally, Roma should learn that pride is a catalyst for failure. The ever boastful Levene finds excitement on incomplete deals that turn out to be mysteriously disappointing. He is embroiled in numerous failed attempt at having the best lead sales for the company.
