Both Hamlet and King Arthur represents strong and determined personalities of their era. These personalities are well defined as heroes as they led their people towards greatest achievements. King Arthur marked the victory in sixth century of Britain against Saxons and has been looked upon as best leaders in history. Arthur has been a visionary and the changes introduced by him during his rule set the theme for the novel. As a child also, Arthur was honest, determined, modest and good at heart. Arthur has displayed a fair sense of judgment in his decisions and is contrary to the impulsiveness of character exhibited by Hamlet. Hamlet has some deep underlying issues which are not acknowledged by him, leading to inner frustration. This is again in contrast to Arthur as he always has displayed clear sense of direction in his decisions.
Hamlet remains in a constant state of melancholy and is disconnected to the affairs of state, he is too busy in sorting out his issues at emotional level that the matters of state are accorded no importance. King Arthur on the contrary is concerned about his state and the peasants and is always working towards their betterment. Arthur has spent his childhood in poverty and hence he comprehends the difficulties faced by people of his state and was determined to make their life better. The heir of Denmark, Hamlet concerned about issues of personal life is little inclined to pay heed to threats to security of Denmark which comes as a surprise to the audience and this is also apparent that Hamlet’s contribution on creating these threats has been enormous. Hamlet’s character demonstrates the weakness of human character and when Hamlet, through the curtain stabs Polonius and does not care to check before stabbing, this act is nearly equal to madness of character arising from impulsive behavior. King Arthur is always optimistic in his approach whereas Hamlet’s character always demonstrates a pessimistic and doomed behavior. Hamlet is exceptionally philosophical and contemplative while King Arthur is rational and practical and builds the firmness of his character gradually over the years. A certain pride of being heir drives Hamlet whereas Arthur is modest and compassionate and connects to his people comfortable. His rationalism and sympathetic nature drives him.
Despite the differences in their personalities, there are some similarities between these heroes. Both of them were very ambitious and were devoted to their causes in life. Their determination to achieve the motive of their lives was admirable and they didn’t hesitate to put their lives at stake for their motives. These figures demonstrated excellent skills and characters leading to their excellent achievements and their recognition as heroes. Hamlet is very sensitive in mature and is easily hurt which is similar to King Arthur. Their good heart, connection with their inner self and wisdom is their defining characteristics and reveals a strong similarity between hamlet and King Arthur. Their strong belief in their motives commands respect and leads to strong determination of their character.
