This movie challenges the way I feel about civil responsibility and its absence in the war against terrorism because every member of the society should do something all in the aim of fighting terrorism. The movie depicts this through three stories that unfold simultaneously all showing the roles played by different members of the society during the era of Iraqi war. The first story is about a republican senator (Tom Cruise) giving a hour-long interview to a sceptical reporter (Meryl Streep) about a strategy of fighting terrorists in Afghanistan through possessing spots in the mountains before terrorists approach them. The second story is about a political science professor (Robert Redford) who tries to influence an affluent student about doing something in fighting terrorism and not to just sit back comfortably. The last story is about two Special Forces who are trapped in Afghanistan at a Taliban ridge waiting to be rescued which was not to be as they are killed by the Talibans. From these stories it is evident that the fourth estate, the politicians, educators and students have teamed up in fighting terrorism all for the love of their country.
Something new I learned about the American government is that it does not have a better strategy in fighting terrorism in the Middle East. The youth are sent in unknown regions all in the name of fighting terror not knowing that it might be their last time to live. This is clearly depicted when the two students were killed by Taliban forces in Afghanistan while waiting to be rescued. It is also shown through the opportunistic proposal of a war strategy by a republican senator on ways of combating terrorists so as to get popularity for a presidential election. It is also learned that America is not only the home of the brave and the free, but also the land of the compromised and opportunistic. The opportunistic is represented by the senator while the compromised is the reporter who grants an interview despite having doubts about the senator agenda.
