Capitalism generally refers to an economic system that encourages the private accumulation of capital. As such, there is usually an aspect of competitive marketing which may be abused as a consequence of bigger disparities in wealth creation. This may leads to exploitation of the less privileged by the rich who control the means of production. The need of creation of awareness among the disadvantaged is important as the review will reveal herein after.
The most interesting part of the video is the manner in which the lecture is delivered. In the video, Zizek is casually dressed to fit the role of the unfortunate people. The intonation is also that of a disappointed person and I particularly like his demeanor while lecturing. Further, the way he also likens real life situations with the theoretical features and this creates a better understanding to the audience since they are able to relate with the lecture.
Basically the movie discusses the cultural aspects of capitalism in a contemporary setting. These aspects are then explained in the perspective of how they impact on the economy. The traditional perspective of spending is captured in the sense that conventionally there were simple consumption patterns where people bought and speculated. The difference between the traditional and the modern character of capitalism as asserted in the video is that in modern capitalism people grab and then try to justify their actions by supporting charitable endeavors.
Non consumption duty of consumers towards the recreating the environment is clear and in consonance with the class notes. This tends to create an aspect of moral economy through directly or otherwise establishing a sense of moral responsibility to the public collectively. This further introduces a factor of ethical consumption through introduction of other ideas supposedly aimed at improving the environment and the general life of other disadvantaged persons.
While discussing the issue of charity in the video, Zizek concludes that the act ends up degrading and demoralizing. For this reason the video presupposes that the use of private property in a bid to alleviate problems that bedevil private property. This is due to the fact that it involves sharing the responsibility with the wealthy thereby introducing a factor of insincerity.
With regard to capitalism, the video provides information to the fact that there are desperate attempts aimed at making the concept work for communism. This is done through the understanding that the bad labor for the good hence putting a humane character to universal capitalism. This leads to more wealth for the well-off while pretending to be tolerant of the underprivileged.
The foregoing clearly shows the dimensions through which capitalism in contemporary societies manifest. As such, the video complements class readings in many aspects as show above. Conversely, it is worth noting that the video is not against certain capitalist aspects such as in charitable efforts the only thing that the video is against is the hypocrisy among the bad elements who take part in such a noble course for the purposes of concealing their wrongful acts. This resonates to all the other topics namely; ethical consumption as well as the moral economy.
