The sports drama, Rocky is an American chartbuster movie of the year 1976, won three Oscars and earned more than $ 225 million. The cost of this movie was only one million dollar and it was made in less than a month. The film was shot in less than a month but since the script of the film is very strong, audiences liked the movie and due to their full support, the film was the biggest chartbuster of the year 1976. The story of the film was written by the Sylvester Stallone who also acted as Rocky in the movie, Sylvester Stallone became a big star after the robust success of the movie and later on five sequels appeared of this movie. In this paper, we would look at several related aspects of the movie, Rocky.
The movie is based on the life of a boxer Rocky. Rocky was a successful boxer in his halcyon days and works as a debt collector for livelihood after retirement in Philadelphia. Rocky is challenged by the then world heavy weight boxing champion, Apollo creed. Apollo was in regular practice and had defeated many boxers. People of Philadelphia had confidence in rocky and they wanted to see him as the winner. Rocky accepts his challenge and starts preparing for the boxing competition.
Rocky was also afraid and discloses the same to his trainer, Mickey Goldmill. Rocky expressed his wish to face the Apollo creed till the final round since it was difficult to defeat him. The day comes of the competition and in the first round, rocky defeats the Apollo. Apollo was not taking the match seriously but from the second round the match becomes interesting and it reached till the final round.
Sylvester Stallone acted and lived the character of rocky. All other actors Talia shire, Burgess Meredith, Burt young and Carl weathers acted very professionally and played their characters very effectively. The sound effects were perfect and the photography was superb. The film was nominated in nine categories for the Oscar and won three of them including vest director, best picture and best film editing. John. G. Avildsen was the director of the movie, who won the Oscar award for the best direction.
The script does not focus on the heroic acts of rocky balboa but also depicts his stupidity and portrayed that he is not an educated person. There are several other boxing movies but rarely one has got the success as the rocky did. The concept, direction was matchless and the movie was not made as feel good only but it gave a bigger massage. At the end of the day, the film says that there are several things which are much more important than the winning and winning is not the everything. The film is fully loaded with action and emotional incidents.
The film was inspired by the Muhammad ali and chuck wepner boxing fight that happened in the year, 1975. The film received acclamations from all over the world and got critics acclaim too. All the reviewers approved the film as a good entertaining movie and gave four stars out of five. The film was not successful commercially only but even after 45 years of its making, it is loved and appreciated by the audiences.
