Tomboy is a movie of mistaken identity, and as the movie moves along, Mikäel, who is actually Laure, befriends Lisa with whom she moves around rather physically. Laure manages to hide her true identity, but when an altercation with one of the boys of their group leads to trouble, Laure’s mother is forced to reveal her true identity to the friends. When the boys try to physically manhandle Laure to see her feminism, Lisa comes to her rescue. When Lisa checks Laure’s sex after sometime and finds Mikäel to be Laure, Lisa accepts her as she is and offers her hand in friendship, which is portrayed by her standing in front of Laure’s house the next morning.
The scene where Lisa stands up to protect Mikäel (Laure) from physical harm shows her humanity. Despite being cheated by Laure for hiding her true identity, Lisa was willing to forgive Laure and protect her from the ignominy of the boys.
It would be hard for me to act the way Lisa did, because I would definitely have been offended by her actions to cover her true identity which would not have mattered to me. That would have been on my mind, but yes, I wouldn’t let others embarrass her physically.
I would not have hidden my true identity, especially to Lisa with whom I could have developed a true friendship. Laure was wrong on that count.
One thing I have learned from this movie is that there is no harm in being you, and trying to imitate others will only cause embarrassment. I would choose to move with people who are sincere and natural and make others understand the problems with trying to be different.
The biggest lesson I learnt from this movie is to be natural. Being natural has its advantages as it gives me the confidence to know that I am liked or disliked for what I am, and not for what I try to become. This will help you overcome most problems people have with their pompous attitudes. This movie did help me change my opinion on Gay and Lesbian Issues, because the movie reflects the inner feelings of these people who are somehow discarded and vituperated by the society. Let’s not forget that they are as normal as we are and their feelings should be respected and not rebuked as is seen today.
The biggest understanding that I can take away from the movie is to respect people for who they are; don’t draw comparisons and stay away from hurting them.
Such movies should be screened in colleges and public places to draw attention to the way people are behaving today. Let there be a conscious effort to correct the mistakes people do, and make this world a better place for all to live in harmony.
