The play takes place in one small Sicilian village Messina in Italy where Don Pedro and his illegitimate brother Don John come after finished war along with their friend and companion in war Claudio. They are all the guests of the town’s governor Leonato who has a lovely daughter, Hero. Here, under the sun of Italy in a villa everyone starts thinking about love. Claudio falls in love with Hero and asks Don Pedro to help him to marry Hero. After helping Claudio to engage with Hero, Don Pedro wants to join together Hero's cousin Beatrice and Benedict. In the meantime the vicious Don John prepares his own plot because he is filled with despise and envy towards his companions. He plans to convince everyone that Hero is dissolute. His plan works. When everything seems to be lost, a duel occurs and a false memorial. After many perplexities and false accusations and funny situations, love prevails and Claudio marries Hero and Beatrice and Benedict overcome their disputes and their constant arguing ceases and they realize that they are in love. Here we can notice two types of love relationships, a one between Claudio and Beatrice which is calm and sincere and the other, more interesting which is filled with tensions and shrewd remarks between Beatrice and Benedict.
This play is one of the best comedies written by Shakespeare and in this way Shakespeare proves that he can also produce good comedies and make laugh everyone who reads or watches it.
