The distinction between service-oriented businesses and product-oriented ones is very important. They are different models that must be analyzed and taken into account in order to optimize profits. There are various people that are diagnosing a change in the music industry from being product-oriented to service-oriented, something that should be evaluated.
Basically, Todd Rundgren’s argument is that it has become a service-based enterprise because it has become more personalized. For him, the advent of the Walkman allowed this change, as people could listen to the music that they wanted to outside of their homes. This was not possible before, as they could not reproduce the artworks anywhere they wanted to; furthermore, they were subjugated to listen to whatever other people were hearing at the moment. On the other hand, Rajiv Rao praises the business model that Stingray Digital sustains, allowing it to be even more profitable than Spotify. By providing users with songs that they may like but have not discovered yet, this enterprise has allowed listeners many new experiences that are in tune with their preferences.
In fact, one could actually argue that music was a service before, in the times of Mozart and Bach, for example. In these eras, the musicians were hired by the royalty and the Church, who sponsored them by getting the artists to make music tailor-fitted for them. Therefore, I have to say that I do not agree with the assertion that music is becoming service-based again, as musicians are not setting their music to personal demands. However, it is important to note that its distribution has become more service-oriented. As the world has become more globalized and connected, it is easier to reach a more niche public, something that the music distribution industry has obviously taken advantage of.
