I am unhappy in my job. I work in a small cubicle with no room to breathe. Unless something changes, I don’t think I will stay with the company for much longer.
I have been working in my office for three years now, and I still haven’t been upgraded from my tiny cubicle. My working space measures just six foot squared. There is enough room for my desk and filing cabinet, but nothing else.
The company has recently refurbished one of the larger offices, turning it into an open plan working space for twelve workers. However, I am not one of the lucky ones to be moved into it. What’s worse is that several people who have moved have been here for less time than I have. It irritates me.
My cubicle doesn’t have a window, nor is it even near one. I have no exposure to natural light. Nobody understands my situation. When I try to confide in anyone, even my family, they look at me as if I’m moaning about nothing. My cousin, Jed, was even worse. ‘At least you’ve got a job,’ he said. I suppose he’s right but, still, he doesn’t understand what it’s like working where I do. I want out of this situation.
I approached my boss last week and asked to speak to him. He agreed, though it was clear he was fitting me in between two other meetings. I told him how unhappy I am and asked if I could please be moved to a larger working space. He sat back in his chair for a second, and I really thought he was considering it, but I was wrong. He said that in two years’ time the company will probably convert another office, so if I worked hard then I might be lucky. He seemed to expect me to be happy with that information. My boss is an idiot.
I’ve started looking around for other employment. There isn’t much out there, which is depressing. I’m starting to think, though, that even if I don’t find another position, I can’t stay in this one for much longer. I’ll give it another month perhaps and see what happens. Either way, I’m going to quit this job.
