My Desire To Become A Dental Hygienist Admission Essay Sample

We all have choices of jobs and career paths available to us in our lives. I have decided to become a Dental Hygienist because I really love the work and I believe that I and that job are ideally suited. To take care of patients, and help those with periodontal diseases, so that subsequently they can see in their beautiful healthy teeth the results of the hard work done on their behalf, is most rewarding. I truly have the devotion and a vocation for this field of dentistry, which I see as a job requiring dedication and responsibility for every patient I help.
I am already familiar with dental hygiene work due to my current employment as a dental assistant in a dental office. As part of my day-to-day activities I provide assistance to dental hygienists, which has helped me to become familiar with many of the techniques and the terminology involved. I am confident that on completion of this degree program I will be able to secure a position as a dental hygienist, not only because I am already working in the dental field, but also because my brother is a dentist and will help me to achieve my objectives.
I am applying for this degree program through this particular university for a number of reasons. Firstly, being in full time employment (40 hours-plus every week) I cannot attend college on a daily basis. In contrast, I can fit my online studies into the hours when I am not working, which is just about an ideal arrangement for me. Secondly, I know that the Fones School of Dental Hygiene at Bridgeport University has been established for many years, and has an excellent reputation, no doubt helped by the arrangements that facilitate online interaction with other students and professors, plus the online discussion board where problems and experiences can be shared for mutual benefit. Also, a very practical reason is that in the small town where I live there is no college able to offer me a dental hygiene study program. The nearest such college is at a considerable distance from my home.
Whilst working for several years in the dental field I have had ample opportunity to watch dental hygienists at work and to learn from them. As time has gone on I have come to realize with increasing conviction that it is the career I too want to follow.
My decision to focus on dental hygiene and on this particular program has taken much research and careful thought, particularly over the past year, which has included consulting with individuals who have worked or are working in that field, as well as seeking advice from my dentist brother, and researching what appropriate courses / programs are available, and what recommendations I could obtain from colleagues and acquaintances to make the choice that I have.
I know that if I am accepted for this program it will be nothing less than a dream come true for me. Thank you for your time and consideration in reviewing my personal statement.
