Medicine is a life long commitment to learning. The learning process that the physician goes through is for humanistic purposes and our calling is to tend to the ill and the most vulnerable around us. I began learning about peoples vulnerabilities at a young age. Growing up in India, I saw first hand the effects of dire poverty on an individual. Furthermore, I saw the consequences that poverty had on the health of an individual. I have tried to learn how to help people in need of assistance throughout my life and from a wide array of teachers.
My first inspiration towards medicine and the art of healing occurred when I was five years old. My older brother was diagnosed with leukemia and was admitted to the hospital for constant tortuous treatments. The doctors told us that my brother did not have many days left to his short life and my family was preparing for the worst. His greatest wish was to see a famous South Indian actor whom he adored. My parents were desperate to make my brother’s wish come true, but did not know where to begin. However, after a little bit of time elapsed, they began making phone calls to friends and friends of friends, and finally got in touch with the actor. Soon, a big white car stopped in front of the Children’s Hospital. My brother’s hero was carrying a box of chocolates and flowers. As he entered the room I saw my brother’s face light up. The satisfaction in his face said it all. The humbleness of the actor and the unconditional love for life from my brother not only changed my life but it made me realize many things about healing. My brother is still alive today, nearly 25 years later. I believe that his healing was aided in no small part by the actor’s visit. Perhaps he did not give the chemotherapy, but the joy that he brought my brother played a part in his morale and determination to get better.
Another influence on my medical personality was my aunt. My aunt is a physician that always inspired me. For all of India’s rapid growth and development it is still very much a class based society. My aunt taught me that illness knows no class and that it is imperative to treat every individual with care and respect. She would literally treat anybody that came to her practice with no thought of remuneration. People would pay for her services with whatever they could afford, sometimes it was as humble as a sack of vegetables. In the solitude of her family, she often wonders if the patients families could indeed afford the payment, but she makes a point of accepting payment in order to maintain the dignity of the family she is treating.
I have worked in a wide range of health care settings and have learned the intricacies of dealing with varied patient populations. While in medical school I was a senior tutor in neuroanatomy and microbiology and the meaning of transmitting this valuable information to my future colleagues was impressed on me. Furthermore, while in medical school I became a certified hyperbaric technologist and received intensive training in wound care. Through my experience at Taunton Hills Senior Home, I gained valuable insight into the elderly population that takes a significant toll on modern health care systems. I have experience in various medicine and surgical areas and ultimately think this has made me a well-rounded physician.
My ultimate desire is to enter family medicine practice. This will afford me the opportunity to see a wide patient population and treat the young and the old alike. Management of health is key to quality of life and it is my goal to help people stay healthy. My experiences have taught me the meaning of graciousness, respect, and discipline in medicine, and I relish the opportunity to apply my skills to the widest number of people possible and make an impact on their lives.
