Final Portfolio: Cover Letter
For the researched argumentative – persuasive essay, I opted to write about cultural differences between the cultures of Saudi Arabia, as contrasted with that of the United States. Although it was acknowledged as a good paper, one realized that there were concerns in terms of the argumentative nature that the paper proposed. The comments delved into trying to find out what I was actually convincing the reader of. It is then that I realized that there could be potentials for improving the thesis statement to propose that the dominant dimension in the culture of Saudi Arabia is it being a collectivist, rather than the individualistic dimension manifested in American culture. As such, decision-making and other endeavors require more time and consultation with family, friends or colleagues than what currently transpires in the American society. From this thesis statement, one could therefore proceed to argue that the collectivist dimension of culture in Saudi Arabia is more conducive to harmony and avoidance to conflicts. The rest of the transition statements would therefore support this argument.
The other essay that warranted was the problem – solution essay, of which my topic was alcohol and substance abuse among college students. There were really very minor comments for corrections and the general overview was that it was a good essay with excellent development of ideas; as well as use of sources for support. A comment was noted regarding proposed solutions being previewed in the introduction portion, which would be followed. Likewise, annotated bibliographies that were suggested to be duly completed would be pursued. These were appropriately imbibed and noted to be followed in writing future essays of this type.
Overall, I have actually been proud of essays that discussed topics pertaining to my family or the community to which I belong. I am convinced that since the subjects discussed were close to my personal experience, these were easier to share and to put in writing. For instance, talking about my brother, Sattam, was the essay I am most proud of since all the information written stemmed freely from one’s heart. The experience was almost similar with the essay which narrated my high school group. On the other hand, the problem – solution essay and the persuasive essay were equally challenging due to the research that needed to be pursued and the need to conform to the required style. In sum, completing the course was an exhilarating and rewarding experience due to the wealth of knowledge learned, and the skills in writing and research that were developed. This truly was a remarkable and memorable learning experience.
