Education is our right and the responsibility to give us this falls not just on the teachers that are with us in schools rather parents have an equal role to play in this regard. Education is supposed to prepare us for the life ahead, and it is supposed to teach us ways in which we could accomplish certain tasks in such ways as to increase our chances of success. Sexual education in this regard is no exception, and we can only plan smartly about sex if we are taught to do so in schools as well as at home.
Sexual education in school was less than ordinary for me and my age fellows for the teacher that was assigned to teach us sex education was very much against sexual activity amongst teenagers, so there was more that he expressed by ways of opinions rather than making us aware of the science of it. This meant that we were less prepared compared to our same age counterparts regarding healthy sexual activities, and since the education was not good enough to help us do well in life, we were often struggling with the basic knowledge and were stumbling over the internet for what we needed to know. The trouble with that source of information was that the bulk of information that was available on the internet was far beyond our level and then there was too much information for us to process through. Let’s just say that the experience was the farthest thing from pleasant.
Things at home were hardly any different. I found my parents to be shy towards discussion of topics such as sex which made us feel like we were asking questions that we should not have been asking. Unfortunately, the environment did not encourage any productive knowledge and, needless to say, our experiences could not be shared with anyone at home or in school. We were fortunate enough not to suffer through any troublesome experiences with sex, but I hate to think about the children who do suffer through unforeseen circumstances in an environment similar to my own.
Because of the environment that we saw at school and in homes, I would have liked to learn regarding a lot of things, the knowledge that we were hardly given access to at the right time. I would have very much liked to learn more about the different ways in which sex could turn out to be harmful to us all. I would have liked to know more about what sexual abuse is and how it could be prevented. This is the knowledge that could help us through the sensible course of actions when we face situations that are too complex for us to understand.
For my younger siblings and friends, I would like to see an environment within the home that actually supports open discussions so that problems could be shared and assistance could be extended. I would like to promote an environment where questions could be asked without hesitation and also where answers could be provided to the extent that is reasonable. This is a measure which is very important so that the young ones with sensitive minds do not have to turn towards other less acceptable sources to be educated on the subject.
Sexual education is important for every individual for a lot of reasons and it is unfair to deprive the young ones of this education like it would be to withhold any other form of education from them. Providing the necessary sexual education could help us make a number of sensible decisions through our lives.
