Miami, located on the coast of Atlantic Ocean, is a city in the United States of America, bordering Florida to the southeast. When my parents moved to this city on 22nd April 2003, it was my first time to be in Miami. At first, I didn’t like the idea of being in Miami, because I really loved my former city, Texas, where I spend most of my childhood life. Nevertheless, I had to accompany my parents who had to move to Miami after my dad got new job. At this time I was 16 years old. However, the city has turned out to be a place where I have really enjoyed living.
On arrival at Miami International Airport, my aunt, hosting us for a couple of days gave us a warm welcome. It was at noon, and the weather was slightly hot and humid (as it is always the case during the wet season). Dark and rainy clouds hang very low giving a warning of impeding rains. The atmosphere seemed muggy and just worsened my already negative impression of this city. Lyn, my aunt, drove us to her house (which is at the sea shore), and showed us the Julia Tuttle Causeway that connects Miami Beach to the mainland on the way. On both sides of the road were elegant buildings, with cars parked at their bays. Although I was used to such scenes in Texas, this fascinated me a lot. Something seemed funny about them. “Why was it called Julia Tuttle Causeway?” I asked. My aunt explained that the city was conceived after, Julia Tuttle, a wealthy citrus grower who contributed a lot to the development of the city.
My aunt’s house was a storey build at the sea shore, giving a wide view of the ocean. It was a new and thrilling experience for me; sea waves rose high such that I thought they would cover our house. It seemed they would sweep the vicinity any moment. Each time the waves would break at the perimeter wall of the house, hitting the wall mightily with a rattling sound. It was like watching at an approaching peril that never occurred! Moments later, I heard a big hoot, followed by heavy booming of an automobile which send a chill down my spinal cord. “Don’t worry,” said my aunt, placing her hand on my shoulders. “It is a ship sailing to the harbor.” “Wow!” I exclaimed.
I hadn’t seen such a great ship. It looked like a house moving on water, moving slowly and perilously. It pushed water to either side, leaving behind a seemingly wide path of bubbling water. It was too amazing because I had just seen them in movies but now it was reality. How lucky I was! Before I knew, it was time for bed, and I could not regret any moment of it because the day full of adventure.
