Contributing to the Field of Emergency Medicine
Born and raised in Saudi Arabia, I was always curious and impressed with the human body: how we evolved in to big people from little bodies; how our skin and organs stretched; and how cells reproduced themselves. The older I got, the more my interest peaked about the wonders of the human body. However, during my senior year in high school when my father was admitted to the hospital to undergo Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery, another type of curiosity was experienced. After surgery, he developed very serious complications that resulted in some breathing problems and internal bleeding. This caused great concern for me and the family. Fortunately, after another surgery, the problem was fixed and my father is doing well now thanks to the doctors who saved his life. When I entered the medical field, I realized there was a need for more healthcare professionals in my country. This family experience, along with childhood curiosity further peaked my interest and fueled passion to expand my knowledge in the field of medicine.
I have maintained above average academic performance throughout my studies and when taking professional exams to increase competency and qualifications as a medical professional. I have successfully completed various internships as well as continuing education courses, and conducted presentations over the past six years. These accomplishments and experiences have laid the foundation for entering your 12-month emergency medicine research fellowship program.
I chose emergency medicine because it allows physicians to give critical diagnoses and treat injuries, trauma, or sudden illnesses when needed quickly and efficiently. It’s an exciting and challenging field that requires not only general medical knowledge, but also knowledge in other fields of medicine and surgery (e.g., Pediatrics, Gynecology, Anesthesia, Orthopedic).
Emergency medicine will allow me to provide vital healthcare services that contribute to the well-being of our community. This part of our profession is the 23rd medical specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties and offered in more than 75 universities throughout the United States.
My short-term goal is to earn a fellowship for entering and successfully completing GW’s 12-month emergency medicine research fellowship program. This program will expand and enhance my research, presentation, and teaching skills in emergency medicine as well as prepare me for the residency training program. My long-term goal is to contribute to the improvement of healthcare in my community as an active member of the medical profession.
GW’s International Medicine Program provides an intensive, robust curriculum and well-rounded learning experiences that will definitely expand my skills while gaining knowledge of the American medical system. I am interested in and prepared to become an effective healthcare professional in my country and contribute to building “capacity” by sharing the latest advances in emergency medicine and critical care.
I have successfully achieved academic goals envisioned and now ready for the next step towards achieving my ultimate goal. And provided the opportunity to become an emergency medicine medical research fellow, I will rise to meet all academic challenges at your university and become a graduate that GW can be proud of.
