The water crisis in Flint has a probable cause of hastened water supplies from the contaminated Flint River and subsequent evasion of proper filtration techniques prior to supplying the water to local residents (Egan, Spangler and Shamus 1). In general, the river water is subjected to a chemical treatment plant which uses chlorine, phosphates and corrosion resistant materials to ensure that it is safe for consumption. As, the above stated aspects of water supply got ignored, my set of solutions for the problem are based on rectification of these aspects.
Firstly, I will ensure that the Flint River water should be tested by certified environmentalist organizations (Department of Environmental quality) and confirm from their report whether the water is suitable for a post chemical treatment or is it to contaminated to be perfectly treated. Secondly, there has to be an arrangement of water resource backup near to the area which has tested water quality and should serve the locales till the problem is full sorted out. Thirdly, an external expert agency/team needs to be hired for examining the flaws in current water treatment plant and same has to acknowledged, rectified, and standardized in risk factors to avoid recurrence of any such mishap. Fourthly, proper quality checks need to be conducted and recorded before supplying the water at regular intervals so that possible variations in water supply quality are shunned in advance. Finally, a separate quality monitoring and resource inspection team has to be incorporated which will assure that all the standard safety and environmental quality factors are in compliance with the standard operating procedures for city’s water supplies. The above mentioned solutions can resolve the problem at large.
