Myself And My Goals Personal Statement Example

Out of all of the things I adore in life, I love working with children the most. Many children have learning disabilities or conditions that require special care to treat and address, particularly in the early years of their academic careers. There are quite a few instances where children do not get the help that they need, and their education falters as a result; this leads to continuing problems with dyslexia and similarly debilitating learning disabilities that hampers children's learning and ability to succeed. It is my fervent belief that, with the help of the Sam Houston State University program, I can learn the skills necessary to help these children get the education they so desperately need to succeed in their adult lives.
My life up to this point has helped immensely to prepare me for the challenge of helping children cope and learn with their disabilities. As a 29-year-old single mother and disabled veteran, I am no stranger to challenges; I served two tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom as a team medic and Suicide Prevention/Intervention NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer), and received an Honorable Discharge for injuries sustained during combat. However, seeing the smile on my six-year-old daughter's face makes all of the strife and struggle worth it. I want to be able to bring that happiness and comfort to other children, particularly those who need extra help combating their own disabilities.
I have a history and a familiarity with learning disabilities; my close personal friend has three daughters, all with dyslexia. Two of them were not tested for the condition until halfway through high school, and one was not tested until college. Because of this late testing, their academic success suffered greatly; I want to make sure that more young people benefit from earlier testing and treatment of dyslexia, so that they can get the most out of their education. My short-term goals over the next few years include graduating with my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology (with a minor in Human Services) from Sam Houston State University, one of the top 15 Psychology Universities in Texas and an institution I am proud to currently attend. I also plan to establish myself permanently in the Walker County area, becoming a homeowner sometime in the next few years. It is a community I am already familiar with, and one I am mor than eager to serve.
In the long term, I would like to obtain my Master's Degree (specializing in School Psychology) from Sam Houston State University, as well as become certified as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). This will help me gain employment in one of the many fine schools in Walker County as a School Psychologist; my ideal setting would be Alpha Omega Academy, located in Huntsville, TX. With the help of the reputable program provided by Sam Houston State University, I hope to understand the nuances of human diversity and scientific psychology, as well as establish myself as an ethical and equally respected school psychologist. Through this comprehensive and extensive education, as well as my own hard work and dedication, I wish to make a substantial difference in the lives of children in the Walker Country area who currently suffer from debilitating learning conditions, and give them the education they deserve.
