2012 was the most important year for me because it was the year my entire family was waiting for one moment: my graduation from high school. Unfortunately, I failed to do this, and was ignored by everybody who had waited so long to see it happen. It was a surprise to everybody, as before 2012, I had been the most hardworking one of any of us.
Starting in secondary school my GPA remained above 3.6. As I went on to high school it stayed the same. Last year, however, I experienced a valley in my educational career. I had always been successful in computer, receiving my ICDL Certificate to use computers and MS Office. I also learned how to use C++ and Visual Basic very easily. My experience grew to what it is today, and I began to realize my ambition was to be a Civil Engineer.
My mother was so proud of me when I told her, excited a member of our family aimed so high for themselves. On June 7, 2012, despite my ambitions I only managed a 2.0 for a GPA, and when my mother heard this it was as if her dreams were crushed. She cried for my future, and all of it also upset my grandfather. Our yearly gathering for “Ramadan” involved me meeting with family I had not seen for a while and normally this was a happy occasion but this year I felt as though they looked at me differently, like I was a loser, or not worthy of their time. It hurt me deeply, and I made the decision to complete my education no matter the major available to me; I just wanted to make them proud.
My mother told me she would stand behind me and support me, providing for me financially as I entered school; this also meant she offered to pay my tuition. With her support, I applied to community college and while I knew I was making my family happy, I was uncomfortable. After just one course, I withdrew from the college. I tried to finish my education by entering Qatar University, but unfortunately was not accepted due to my GPA being lower than 2.5. While this was difficult to deal with, I did not let it stop me. Planning to get a 4.5 on my IELTS in an effort to apply to Coventry University, I continued on. CU is a British university and the first time I took the test I received a 3.5 out of 9.0, and the second time I earned a 4.0. I began to realize my study methods may be subpar and after some adjustments, on my third attempt was able to earn a 4.5, applying to the university and getting accepted within four days.
Following my acceptance, I visited the Ministry of education to apply for a scholarship, as well as other documents of approval necessary for my travel. Two weeks passed and I heard nothing, forcing me to travel back in order to see what had happened. They told me my application had been rejected; I felt faint. After all the trouble I had gone to and obstacles I had overcome I was met with yet another difficulty.
With nowhere left to turn, I visited the mosque to pray, requesting god’s help in granting me a successful life and career. Afterwards I went home to answer my mother’s questions. She asked why I did not just retake the test for my last high school grade. It seemed like a plausible plan, and so I did, earning a 3.5 GPA. With this I applied for a scholarship toward English. Today I have accepted said scholarship to study English in American Language Institute in San Diego; I enrolled in 2016, proud that this was the first step toward a university. After three months of diligent work, I realized my dream, getting accepted into Tennessee Tech University.
Today I am on my second course to study Civil Engineering. My advice to any students, struggling or not, is to follow your ambitions and never give up. Even if the obstacle seems too big, or too small to care about, education is important. Personally, I wasted four years in a downward spiral after I failed, flailing in an attempt to succeed again, but once I finally did, and it was worth it. And it will be worth it for anybody else too.
