Summary of the article
Appearing in the New York Times, Gillis article “Climate Panel Cites near Certainty on Warming” offers a substantive view on various issues aligned with global warming. Precisely, the current article delves on the persistent notions, which indicate that human beings are the main causative agents of global warming. In fact, the article comprises of findings from international scientists on this various investigations carried out on the role of human beings with regard to the occurrence of global warming. The findings from the said scientists are somewhat certain on the fact that human beings are the main precipitators of global warming. While it is true that there has been some reduction in the rate of global warming, it is essential to note that the surface temperature of the earth has risen significantly from the year 1951 to the year 2010. This rise in the earth’s temperatures has led to the consequent melting of the snow, warming of the oceans, and the overall rise in global climate to the extreme (Gillis, 2013).
Critique of the current item
Based on a personal thought, the notions contained in Gillis article are truthful and substantive. This can be accredited to the fact that various innovations devised by human beings contribute to the significant degradation of the ecosystem; thus, precipitating the occurrence of global warming (Gillis, 2013). The current article is substantive in nature because it is based on pure scientific research. In addition, the notions contained in the article are arranged in chronological order, which makes it more convincing. Overall, there are various reasons that justify the fact that human beings are the primary cause of global warming.
Above all, various human activities entail burning of carbon containing substances. This results in production of significant amounts of carbon dioxide. Evidently, carbon dioxide is a green house gas that is detrimental in nature as it contributes to the occurrence of global warming. An example of a human activity that results in release of carbon dioxide is deforestation. This activity leads to the eventual depletion of vegetative cover; thus, increasing the amounts of carbon monoxide found in the air. Therefore, an increase in deforestation activities results in an increase in carbon containing gases found in the atmosphere, which precipitates the occurrence of global warming. This analysis justifies the fact that human are the main causes of global warming.
