Nixon 1995 Movie Review

The movie Nixon challenged the way I feel about the innocence or guilt of President Richard Nixon in the Watergate Scandal. The movie shows that the complex nature of President Nixon originated from his childhood and his earlier life where two of his elder brothers died from illnesses, and the 1960 presidential elections. The events turned him into a paranoid and shy man who could always resort to uncalled for actions. The media had portrayed Nixon as having being aware of the break inn in the Watergate hotel, Democrats’ headquarters.
However, after seeing the movie, one is left to question the truth behind the scandal. There is the constant insistence form Nixon that his enemies including the media with leftist ideologies were plotting for his downfall. Conversely, at the same time there was the insistence from the media and Democrats that Nixon knew and oversaw the raids. Furthermore, after learning of his abusive and paranoid traits one’s opinion cannot fail to be swayed into believing that indeed he might have had a hand into the scandal.
Something new I learned about the United States government from this movie was that it is at a very advanced stage, Democracy being at a high level and the president not above the law. Advanced democracy is proved when Nixon failed twice in elections before ultimately capturing the presidency slot in 1968. In his last defeat when he ran for governorship in California State, he issued a submission statement claiming that he had retired from active politics. Even though he was president, he was still liable for prosecution for his involvement in the Watergate scandal. The case led to Nixon resigning from office and into a life of isolation and sickness. From the scandal, his law licence in New York was also suspended showing how the president is like a normal American citizen in USA.
