The article “After birth abortion” was written by William Saletan to support the idea that after death abortion is similar to the normal abortion. The author argues that as far as abortion is allowed, then after death abortion is allowable since there is no much difference. The author supports this by explaining that in both cases, the mother has a choice on whether the child should live or not. In both cases, live of the fetus is ended and the difference in the two cases is the time when the live is bought to the end. According to the article, the newborn is assumed not to have acquired personhood as long as it is killed immediately it is born. This therefore cannot be said to be murder.
The article is dealing with an issue that I strongly do not support. According to me, live begins after conception and therefore abortion is not be socially acceptable unless the pregnancy has endangered the life of the mother. The issue in this article is even more interesting to discuss since it addresses killing someone who has already been born. There is a difference between a fetus and a new born and hence killing a new born can never be compared to abortion. After birth abortion is a new concept to me since I have never heard it before I read this article.
I was discussing the topic with some of my classmates and found out that some of them were in support of the topic. I initiated the debate after I realized that some states are intending to implement a law that will allow abortion. In the discussion, many of my friends supported the fact that after birth abortion is different from the normal abortion. Many also argued that after birth abortion should never be allowed anywhere in the world since as far as a fetus is alive after birth; it is obvious that the mother is not endangered. However, some of my friends, especially ladies supported the idea by arguing that abortion can be dangerous to the lives of the ladies and hence after birth abortion is better in that it does not cause any danger to the mother.
