Nonverbal communication is as strong as the verbal communication. It includes several approaches of communication like gestures and body languages but not the words. In absence of words, silence plays a major role in nonverbal communication and becomes more authoritative when accompanied by gestures like glare and movements of hands. Recognizing the power and effect of nonverbal communication, someone has rightly said ‘action speaks louder than words’. This paper discusses the nonverbal communication along with several related aspects and corroborating examples.
Nonverbal and verbal communication both has different styles that vary from place to place and people to people. There are many places where people like to interact, share and talk a lot with others. This is commonly visible in eastern and African countries. On the other hand it is also not difficult to find places where people like to stay alone in their separate territories. In society like US people do not like much any kind of intervention in their space by other peopl and when somebody tries to trespass into their territory, they strongly object it either verbally or nonverbally. Other than societies, there are some places like library, meeting room and classrooms etc. where people are supposed to be very calm. In such places sophisticated behavior and nonverbal communication is code of conduct and has to be maintained.
Recently I visited a public library where I found an empty chair and occupied that. I opened my bag and unpacked my notebooks, books, pencil, and pen on the table. Suddenly I felt that a guy came behind me, I looked towards him and sensed that he wanted me out of the chair. Then I observed that others also expect the same thing from me as if chair and the place belong to the guy who was standing behind me. I decided not to quit the chair and then the guy left the place as if he has withdrew his claim from the chair and surrendered it to me.
I witnessed this situation for the next time when I visited a neighborhood restaurant and found a chair empty and occupied the chair. I noticed that two girls came there and glared at me. I did not take a second and understood that either both of them were sitting their earlier or consider that place as their own. I ignored them and then I noticed that they occupied two chairs just next to me and ordered their meal. Their behavior was absolutely normal and they were posing like they did not bother about my behavior.
I analyzed both the incidents and found that I refused to comply with their expectations at both places. The refusal was though not expressed and it was in nonverbal mode but the massage was as good as it would have through verbal communication. In fact sometimes non verbal communication turns out to be more effective than the verbal combination. It also produces the objective without creating unnecessary problems or confusion. After having observed the abovementioned state of affairs, it is good to conclude that nonverbal communication has no less effect than the verbal communication. Though there is a difference in the nature of both the mediums of communication but both the mediums are equally effective.
