I am from a small happy Christian family which values the norms and conforms to the ethical standards of the society. Being the second of three children, I am happy to associate with parents and the two siblings. Their cooperation has enabled me to enjoy myself and relate well with the rest of the people. The following are some of the major norms in my family:
- No to Stealing
All the members of our family are forbidden from stealing. It is great offence for anyone to take any property belonging to another person without their consent. This is a more which is essential, not only in my family, but in the entire community. It is useful because it instills the spirit of hard work and responsibility. Anyone who violates it is severely punished by fining or imprisonment. Since my parents are concerned about the behavior of our family members, they re always ready to caution and take action to anyone who steals another person’s property.
- No Drug Abuse
This is amore which applies to all the members of our family. In fact, it is a great offence to engage in the consumption of bhang, alcohol and cocaine. It is not only prohibited in my family, but unlawful. In my family, an offender can be punished by flogging or rehabilitation. However, if handed over to the police, they may be imprisoned in accordance with the law. As a basic unit of the society, it is important for every family to educate children to be wary of such practices since they are threats to peace and progress. For instance, a child who is exposed to these drugs may be dangerous to their family and the entire community. After dropping out of school they engage in criminal activities like robbery, rape and murder. This explains why our family condemns it.
- Daily Shower
All the members of my family are required to take daily showers. Personal hygiene is a universal concept encouraged in all parts of the world. In this regard, my parents encourage everyone, especially the children to clean their bodies. It is important to be clean since it can earn one respect amongst his peers. For instance, a child is supposed to be clean to be able to freely and confidently interact with others in school. Any child who fails to bath is not coerced to do it, but is rebuked, denied food, flogged and subjected to other forms of natural punishment.
- Going to Church Every Sunday
As a Christian family, we are committed to serving God. According to my parents, the best way to demonstrate our faith is to observe the Sabbath. This is a folkway which is applicable to all the Christians. Although it is not binding, each of my family members is encouraged to allocate at least two hours every week to serve God. After all, we believe that a person should be ready to seek for spiritual nourishment because it is essential for a healthy life. However, as a matter of faith, no one is punished for violating this norm. However, children may be forced to attend a church service because it is the responsibility of the parents to bring them up in accordance with their religious doctrines.
- Respect to the Elders
It is the responsibility of the children to show respect to their elders. This is a folkway expected of children in our family. As serious parents who want their children to be obedient, our parents always advise us to show regard to them, our elder siblings and any other senior person in the society. In deed, this is a very important virtue which is necessary for a cordial relationship between us and the rest of the society. After all, it is a cultural practice which has been done in our community since time immemorial. Although no one can compel the adults to respect one another, they are expected to be rational in their decisions. However, the youth and children can be forced to comply with it and at times get punished for any violation.
- Politeness
As a result of their commitments, our parents expect every member of the family to be polite in their language. Everyone is encouraged to use humble words such as excuse me, thank you, I am sorry, please, just to mention, but a few. In my family, this is a folkway expected of all the members especially the children. It is essential in promoting interpersonal communication and understanding. Rudeness is a vice which should not be condoned. Therefore, our family encourages all the members to humble themselves before their age mates, elders, parents and all the other people regardless of their age, designation or social class. As an approved behavior, anyone who violates it is punished. Although it may be difficult to punish adults, they can only be counseled. However, any child who fails to abide by it is punished on the spot. Thus, they become polite whenever they communicate to any person especially when they need to captivate their attention, request for help or ask for forgiveness.
