Low health standards and lack of effective medical initiatives in Kentucky have created the need for private intervention in the health sector. Precisely, organizations have taken part in multiple initiatives to secure the healthcare of the citizens and to heighten their awareness on the need to constantly seek medical intervention. The video, Remarking Rural Health gives an overview state’s health status. Precisely, it is focused on the need to create essential preventive care initiatives for the betterment of the people’s health concerns. The video mentions that Kentucky has alarming rates of obesity, cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular related diseases. According to Dr. Wells, the pervasive nature of these health complications is because of poor medical care initiatives embraced by the citizens (Kentucky Educational Television, 2016). He mentions that most people would rather have a stressful day at work rather than seek medical counsel. His program is intentioned to empower more medical practitioners to serve the population as well as create awareness on the need to seek medical counsel.
People are often lesser educated in rural counties. As such, their knowledge on preventive health measures is rather low. Additionally, these counties have a shortage of medical practitioners. In Kentucky, for instance, 81 out of the 120 counties do not have sufficient medical officers (Kentucky Educational Television, 2016). The population mainly relies on hard labor to make the most out of their lives and these practices compromise their healthcare. Research conducted by the Alliance Coal company revealed that people working in the mines rarely sought medical attention unless they were sick and unable to go to work. In fact, nearly ninety percent of the cardiovascular disease casualties were unaware of their medical condition and were not taking any medication. To counter this flaw, the research partners created educational materials aimed at enhancing the enlightenment of the population. Through education on proper healthcare, costs of treatment and hospitalization is reduced since proper preventive measures are utilized. The health program makes the most out of the limited nurses in the region to provide health care to the underserved community.
Nonetheless, it is worth mentioning that the enactment of these programs requires insurance company and federal funds to facilitate the legislative propositioning, research and positioning of the entrepreneurial nurses. The video also mentions the presentation of the Diabetes Center of Excellence. This program is held at the Madison County Health Department. At the institutions, patients gave their remarks on the nature of survives offered by the program. The diabetes educators enlighten the patients on how to check their glucose and carbohydrate levels (Kentucky Educational Television, 2016). Additionally they provide insight on how to self-inject insulin for optimal health results. Through utilization of technology and medical insight provided by the voluntary nurse practitioners in the region, the prevention of diabetes through health promotion programs and community health practices overseen by nurses, the community has embraced more influential medical practices than before. Nonetheless, it is worth mentioning that having more nurse in the region would heighten the effectiveness of this program.
According to the Center of Disease Control, most regions in Kentucky are exposed to cases of obesity at a tender age (2015). For instance, Kentucky high school had an alarming obesity rate of about 18 percent in 2013. This implies that the younger people in the state are exposed to vulnerabilities associated with cardiovascular illnesses and risked insulin resistance common for people with diabetes. The most effective way to counter the development of this problem is through empowerment of the youth by increasing their awareness on proper nutrition and body exercising.
