In the contemporary times of advanced medical and healthcare facilities, there are unfortunately a lot of social groups termed as ‘underserved populations’ who face numerous hindrances to health care. Such barriers include lack of medical insurance, inadequacy of personal resources, as well as limited resources within their communities. Therefore, it is the utmost responsibility of every nursing professional to provide facilitation to such populations and help them overcome their shortcomings when it comes to healthcare.
As far as my own experience is concerned, the opportunity of working at West Virginia University Hospital and Wellstar Kennestone Hospital allowed me to serve innumerable patients belonging to underserved populations. Interacting with them on a daily basis and having a chance to observe their inadequacies made me realize that poverty or lack of resources are not the only reasons impacting their health outcomes. In fact, these underserved populations are comprised of homeless, delinquents, domestic violence victims, and people unable to pay their rents and bills. Truly, I have been able to know about these populations and their disadvantaged conditions only because I worked with them intimately.
I am convinced that I can demonstrate adequate commitment towards the underserved populations in the future as a nurse. A healthy community is only possible when all healthcare professionals including nurses work in unison and support each other for making drastic improvements in the health of all patients, no matter which class, ethnicity, or race they belong to. My professional experiences have allowed me to work with people belonging to diverse cultural backgrounds. Such opportunities have facilitated me in acquiring the indispensable skills required to commit myself as a nurse. The same skills of social interaction, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making would certainly allow me to offer the best services to underserved populations – the needy, poor, and the destitute.
