Introduction
Change is an inevitable process, and it cannot be avoided. Some changes are for the better, and some may cause conflicts. So, when our new director decided to reorganize the department I work in, many of my co-workers showed a grudge as their opinions were not taken into consideration. As a nurse leader, I had to look into the matter and identify factors that create conflicts and look for ways on how to can manage them. According to me, there were several factors such as lack of communication, adjusting to new technologies and excessive workload.
Adjusting to new technologies is another hassle for the nurses. The reorganization of the department also introduced many new technologies that are supposed to make our jobs easier and help us in our work. However, the new technologies are extremely complicated and require a lot of knowledge about how it works (The Impact of Emerging Technology on Nursing Care, 2016). Therefore, to prevent conflicts, it is important that proper instructions and guidelines are given in order to use the new technologies.
The reorganization also involved some cost cutting programs like reducing inpatient care services. By doing this, the cost of labor will decrease, and fewer cases of impatient care will lead to fewer staff members. This will result in dissatisfaction among the staff. It is very necessary that such decisions are taken while considering its impact on the staff (Jennings, 2008).
Excessive workload is another common cause of resentment, and I would take a keen interest in how to balance the work load for the existing staff (Clarke and Donaldson 2008). I discovered that the new technologies that aim at making the work easier and render quality services to the patients have rather, increased the workload because of inadequate knowledge about the new technologies. Not everyone is comfortable with using the new technologies as the nurses are not well acquainted with them. This may lead to malfunctions and other types of medical errors that can have severe implications. This can decrease the level of job satisfaction and increase physical and emotional burnout. In order to prevent these factors to cause deep-rooted conflicts, it is necessary to take a timely action (Veer et al., 2011). In order to prevent these factors to cause deep-rooted conflicts, it is necessary to take a timely action.
