The common theme linking these pieces of work as it relates to humanities and my professional practice is identity responding to the question who am I? Sociologically, after establishing an identity as a human being the next step is social identity. The poem, “if’ clearly portrays the identity of a boy being socialized into a man offering positive characteristic features that enhances this progression. Ted Braithwaite portrayed by Sydney Pointer demonstrates another social identify struggle in answering who am I as a social being. Barbara Streisand’s musical rendition of ‘Run Wild’ portrays a woman seeking social identity in a mixed up world where it is difficulty finding the ‘Who am I’ in a male dominated music industry. - Description of first nonliterary art work
- Media, form, or genre
‘To Sir with Love’ is a British Drama film. Films are considered other art forms containing many still images. Ultimately, these images are mounted and shown on screens in theaters or from projectors. Filming is an illusionary process of moving images after photographing actual scenes using as motion picture cameras. A combination by photographic drawing as well miniature models are employed in filming. Some producers combine various techniques while other use them individually adding visual effects to enhance the production (Cook, 2007).
The star in this film (Sydney Pointer) was an unemployed black engineer looking for a job in a developed society. He found himself in a classroom of disagreeable children as their teacher. These students were notorious to the extent of chasing teachers out of the profession and school. The class had just one black student and pointer had a full demonstration from the rest of the white racist group which lives up to their reputation (Harris, 2008).
It was a win/ lose game between Pointer and these students until Pointer wins when the student lulu singles him out as her dance partner. The class presents him with a gift signifying their acceptance of him as a teacher and person. By this time Pointer’s dream engineer job search came through, but he turned it down realizing that he found his social identity as a teacher in that school (Harris, 2008).
- Artist’s techniques in terms of media or style
The film producers adapted a British drama style for media presentation in theatres across the world. However, it differs because the producers emphasized British Drama culture instead of a American Hollywood film dispensation.
a. Use of four elements of artistic composition.
The four elements of artistic composition contained in a film production are, Mise-en-scène, which represent obvious effects that were placed into scenes before the actual filming. This could have been identified as deliberate efforts to capture the English country side and city school culture, highlighting British architecture and landscape
Cinematography relates to actual shooting of the film pertaining to camera angles, distance and movement. This film is relatively old. Therefore, the cinematography features are not quite current. As such, while the visual effects are excellent, observations are that the angles, distance articulation and movement dynamics were not the most advanced (Bordwell, & Thompson, 2004).
Editing aligns segments of the film into a whole production. From viewing the most recent production edition features were relatively adequate. Sections which did not seem to coincide with the others could have been due to technical difficulties and not editing Sound is the fourth element in artistic composition. It consists of diegetic and non-diegetic components. Diegetic relates to the film world story which in this case is a portrayal of racisms in English culture and how persistence can resolve even the worst issues in the society. More importantly, is depicted the voice and mood of someone who was willing to compromise for the benefit of even those who did no value him as a person neither his services (Bordwell, & Thompson, 2004).
Non-diegetic sound emanates from mood through narration such as cars, buses, trains and airplanes. Sounds of bus engines were audible and trains too while the story was portrayed in film ((Bordwell, & Thompson, 2004).
- Description of the second nonliterary art work.
Media, form, or genre
Music is the second non-literary form used in this presentation being depicted by melody and harmony (pitch). It is also characterized by rhythm (tempo, meter, articulation). (Small, 2007).
The Lyrics of this song were written by Robin Hugh Gibb and music. The music portrays the artists in a place seeking to identity with self and society described as a wonderland. While in this place, however, the music transcends the listener/audience into an awareness of ‘with eyes open wide.’ It concludes by confirming that still on the edge of time no one can carry the dreams away because ther is an island exists where anyone can be safe (Small, 2007).
- Artist’s techniques in terms of media or style
The music was written for an adult American audience, but the tempo, articulation, meter and rhyme capture international audiences.
a. Use of four elements of artistic composition
The four elements of artistic composition in music are melody, harmony, rhythm and dynamics. This piece was a rendition by the popular Barbara Streisand one of the most successful female music vocalists/artists in American history. Even though her genre was published as being pop music Run Wild artistic composition as it relates to melody, harmony, rhythm and dynamics is not purely pop oriented. She flavored the dynamics with some elements which could be recognized as mingled deep in soul reaching the soul.
C. Provide a subjective analysis
1. Discuss the literary work
- Subjective interpretation
This poetry is very useful for men/boys in our society. It should become part of our literary culture since there are few adequate male role models for young boys in the society.
- Mood of the literary work
The mood fluctuates between formal and informal while addressing the audience as if offering an admonition
- Theme
The thematic concept is ‘if’ boys would adhere to the counsel offered the through poetry they can develop into successful manhood. Alternatively, the thematic statement relates to’ if’ as a cautionary mechanism meaning think first.
a. Discussion on how conclusions regarding personal interpretation, mood, and theme for the literary work were derived.
This poem was read to me as a child and various aspects explained regarding it literary meaning. Therefore, the conclusion deducted from this literary work can be considered previous knowledge recall.
2. Describe the first nonliterary art work
Subjective interpretation
The story is very valuable as a form of building an identity with another society in the face of adverse situation. It shows how overcoming attitudes can resolve conflicts
- Mood of the art work
The mood fluctuates among aggression, piety and conciliation. Aggression when attacked by students, piety as a form of passive resistance and conciliation when a resolution eventually occurs.
- Theme
The thematic concept is ‘love;’ the statement embraces loving everyone irrespective of race or cultural background
- Discussion on how conclusions regarding personal interpretation, mood, and theme for the literary work were derived.
These emerged from knowledge of the society where the film was produced and knowledge of literature.
3. Describe the second nonliterary art work
- Subjective interpretation
The music artist, lyrics and rendition represent a very high level of musical performance. Barbara Streisand is one of my favorites for oldies. Even though her genre had been pop music she adds a serenading mood to her music through the dynamic articulation of her voice control.
•Mood of the art work
- The mood of this music rendition is deliberately soothing while enticing to ‘Run wild.’ Precisely, the musical dynamics created an atmosphere of flying instead of running.
- Theme
The thematic concept is one of taking control while the statement says ‘be cautious.’
- Discussion on how conclusions regarding personal interpretation, mood, and theme for the literary work were derived
Conclusions were derived from personal experience of years listening to Barbara Streisand’s music and being one of her fans.
D. Analysis the relationship among the works
• Similarities in subject matter, mood, and theme among the works
The poem relates a cultural values characteristic of successful men who have strong self-identity as Sydney Pointer portrayed in to ‘Sir with Love.’ Even though Barbara Streisand is a woman her music career demonstrated ‘if’ qualities.
• Differences in subject matter, mood, and theme among the works
The major differences in these three works were related to how the same message was communicated. Developed of positive social identity was communicated through poetry, film and music through admonition, aggression and piety and soothing tone in music.
1. Discuss how the similarities and differences enhance your understanding of the themes and moods.
Similarities and difference enhances my and understanding of themes and moods by allowing me to observed how literary and nonliterary versions can communicate the same meaning though cultural adaptions.
E. Reflect on each analysis presented
1. How the themes, moods, and meanings you have identified in the works shed light on the human condition
The human condition is always seeking to express identity. Themes and moods provide an avenue for this to flow through thoughts and actions.
- How you relate these themes, moods, and meanings to your profession
Any professional practice must identify with other professions as they compete in the social world in the market place. Ultimately, when evidence based practices infiltrate the professional environment it is an alarm seeking identification with socially acceptable behavior within the science as it relates to the mood and theme of the professional environment.
3. How knowledge of the humanities is valuable in relation to your profession
Knowledge of humanities is relevant to the nursing profession because it reinforces the holistic nature of humans. Often when a person becomes a patient nurses may perceive just the physical aspect of his being at the time. There may be temporary failure of interpreting the human condition away from mood and a theme written within the complaints presentation. Hence, knowledge of humanities reinforces this awareness.
F. Summarize your main points in a conclusion
Three pieces of art work were explored for application to the nursing profession in an effort of understanding the importance of acquiring knowledge in this discipline. Rudyard Kipling’s “if’ was highlighted as the main literary art from. ‘To Sir with love’ film and Barbara Streisand’s musical rendition of Run Wild’ were the two no literary works used in this presentation. The common theme was one of seeking expression of a positive social identity.
