For this brief discussion post, the author of this report has been asked to pick from a list of notable and trusted nursing theorists. For the purpose of this particular report, the person that has been chosen is Martha Rogers. The items that will be covered and summarized for this theorist will include the theorist in question, their nursing background, the fundable principles of the nursing theory put forward by that person and how those lessons and theories can be applied to the work and studies of the author of this report.
It is perhaps not the only theory that Ms. Rogers is known for, but one of the more prominent theories that she put forth is known as the Unitary Human Beings Theory. Before getting into that, a summary of Ms. Rogers and her background should be covered. She was born in 1914 and she passed in 1994. She was inducted into the 1996 American Nurses Association (AMA) Hall of Fame in 1996, just two years after death. She was born in Dallas, Texas and was the oldest of four children. She went to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in the 1930’s. She started off as a public health nurse starting in 1937 and eventually moved onto the Connecticut Visiting Nurses Association in the early 1940’s. She was a huge proponent of scientific study of a “rigorous” and thorough nature (ANA, 2017).
Anyhow, the main facets of the Science of Unitary Human Beings are pretty basic but they are also very important. She believed that humans and the environment in which they exist are concurrent and co-existing beings. In turn, people can and should keep that in mind when it comes to moving people towards better health. The major concepts and parts of the theory include that humans are human-unitary, that health is an expression of the life process, that nursing is the study of the “unitary, irreducible, indivisible and environmental fields” and that there is a proper scope of nursing and environmental field when it comes to the same (Wayne, 2014). As for how the author of this report will apply this to nursing studies and job performance in the future, the author will make sure to consider the environment and the patients and nursing staff themselves when it comes to how the author acts, responds and perceives what is going on.
