Supersize Me Movie Discussion and Assessment
The Supersize Me movie was made to enlighten others on the subject of what Americans eat. It was supposed to be an eye opener considering that many people in modern day times battle obesity. Our choices and selections and the freedom to eat what we want, when we want and how we want has taken a toll on our health. There are pros and cons seen when one views the movie. They are not necessarily pointed out but they are apparent. These will be discussed.
The first thing one may notice in Supersize Me movie is the fact that the title says Supersize Me. This can be taken literally as going larger in what we eat and in the amount that we eat. The title alone is a pro but can be seen negatively as a con. Children are obviously one of the first things also seen that is a pro. We want to make sure that American children eat healthy, that they won’t have to battle with weight gain. The con here is that many are sitting together and they are singing a song and repeating it over and over again. The large children are up front and so you realize what eating fast food can do.
According to the song the children were singing they were making hand gestures of the McDonalds arch. According to one source that is “America has become the fattest nation in the world.” (Youtube, 2004). Unfortunately the number of Adults with obesity has increased
tremendously and continues to do so at an alarming rate. A great pro was to use the schools and reveal what students eat. Showing what the USDA approved for children to eat will help many in the future to shape and make the right choices on what should not be eaten and what should be.
Another pro is that the Appleton Central Alternative High School chose to serve the students a better choice of foods that were much healthier. They use a natural foods programs and there is no beef served and no fried foods in oils. They made a decision to remove gum ball and candy machines or anything unhealthy for the children so that they will all eat well. The other pro is that the cost of doing this is about the same as a non-healthy diet in other schools. To conclude it what can be learned is that students and parents need to be more active in what the schools are giving children to eat and make the healthier choice, it will make a difference.
