I fail to understand most of the world around me, and the world seems to misinterpret me. However, when I need to relate and to feel understood, I do not go to a person, but to an object. The object that best describes me is my longboard. This can be seen in the Personal, Practical and Universal aspects of the chosen object.
My black bird flies on the road like a road runner. Its wheels are smooth and strong, and its black and rough surface is perfect for my feet. I remain firmly attached to it throughout my inner-city race. I clasp unto its side like a surfer unto its board, and like a rider on a wild horse, finding security in the harsh surface of the deck. The longboard is old as I have had it for many years, but it is reliable. Its surface is marked from place to place, and each chip has a story. It has been worn in front, but this makes it look like a serious longboard, for a person who has spent many years commuting on it. It looks like a longboard for an experienced rider. I know its moods, its flaws and I can rely on it whenever I bend my knees for downhill riding, or I slide to reduce speed and take curves. I can be sure it will listen to me, as faithfully as an old friend for whom a single touch or look is enough to understand me. The black bird is like me, harsh, marked and black on the outside, but if one has the curiosity to turn it upside down, that person would suddenly see its explosion of colors. Its blue-red-yellow pattern symbolizes the freedom, joy and love of life that riders feel while racing on a longboard. Like me, the longboard is complex it has two sides, and many secrets to share. Above all, it symbolizes freedom and the love for movement, and for this reason, it is perfect for me.
The longboard is made of plywood of the best quality and it is meant for cruising within the city. It has a pintail which gives it character and makes it look as slender as an athlete during a race. It runs smoothly on the streets, its length and agile sprint being unusual enough for people to look vaguely surprised and anxious. But my longboard is not unusual; it is as familiar to me as the air I breathe. Because it is longer than a skateboard, and it has stronger and larger wheels, it is perfect for commuting within the city. It can be as fast as a car, and it is also a very entertaining way of traveling. I choose it every day because its qualities make it the best means of transportation for me. It makes sense to use it in order to reach faster in places where the car cannot be used. While mastering the longboard requires a lot of time, a few sessions are enough for one to be able to cruise on it successfully. This is particularly true for gifted riders, or for those who are determined enough to master it. I also make friends easily but it takes a lot of time for someone to get to know me well, because I can be difficult, and many people may give up trying. For example, it only took me three lessons to be able to ride on it from home to school. Of course, becoming a true rider requires much more practice, and many individuals experience many falls before being able to tame this wild creature. A friend of mine tried the longboard but ended up in the hospital with a broken arm after only two attempts. She gave up trying, but for those who do not renounce so easily, rewards would soon come. If one manages to master the board, he or she will have a safe, cheap and entertaining means of transportation for years to come.
Longboards have many different utilities, and each of them fascinates youngsters equally. It is no wonder that it has become increasingly more popular for young people in the past few years. The development of longboarding brought with it competitions, and extreme riding. As an rider with more than 5-years- experience, I know for a fact that it is not extreme riding which makes the longboard unique, but cruising through the city, because it gives a chance to be part of a community. Lone riding is no fun, and my own experiments as a rider allow me to believe that the longboard is not destined for lonely people, although it may seem like it. Longboarding for speed developed in the recent years together with the contemporary society’s obsession with time. Youtube videos illustrate the fascinating movements of professional riders, and inspire others to try it as well. The entire universe moves faster than ever, and in the American society, being slow means being broken, just as in the case of the longboard. For me, going in full speed is both thrilling and scary, and each time it feels as if choice stood in front of me, in the form of a road larger than life, where anything could happen. I may be the best longboard rider in the world, and I am still not ready to take a life and death decision. Even though longboards are known for their capacity to touch the speed of light, for me, knowing that the potential exists is enough to create a sense of self-pride. One has to choose to either use it at full speed, facing potential life and death consequences, or to refuse to use that potential, and only remain satisfied with the fact that it exists.
The personal analysis of the object therefore reveals that it has a physical quality that makes it resemble me, such as having a dark and harsh exterior, but a smooth and colorful interior side, being built for speed and the outdoors, or allowing a person to feel free. A practical analysis shows that the longboard is easy to ride, although it may be difficult to master, but it is nevertheless useful and entertaining. I also make friends easily, but it may be difficult for someone to get to know me closely. Finally, the universal analysis reveals that, while it has potential for great speed, and dangerous rides, it can also be used safely for cruising, and allow the potential to remain dormant. I also feel that a dark side in me may push me to go faster and faster, but I remain aware of the danger, and choose life every day. If I were to transform into an object one day, I would definitely become this longboard, because many of my memories are already linked to it, and I feel that part of me is already hidden beneath the surface of the board, where the potential for speed and danger lingers untouched.
