The observation began at around 3:30 PM on March 28th 2016. The subject of the observation is an infant, here named GD, and is 11 months old. At the beginning of the observation, he just woke up from his afternoon nap and is alone at home with his mother.
GD woke up with a cry. His face was red, and he was flailing his arms and legs while lying on his back. Upon hearing a child cry, his mother walked to him, picked him up to soothe him. Mother checked if the child was clean to find out the reason of the crying. Finding out that GD was indeed clean, she carried the child to the kitchen and tried giving him the bottle with the formula next, which calmed the child down. GD was seated in a child’s chair, gripping the bottle in two hands while drinking from it. Simultaneously, he was also looking around. This was going for a few minutes. Eventually GD threw the bottle on the ground with his right hand. Mother picked up the bottle, cleaned it appropriately and attempted to give it to the child again. GD refused the bottle by turning his head from left and then right.
Concluding that the child no longer needs food, mother picked up GD from his chair and let him down on the floor of the living room, next to his toys. Child picked up a red cube – a part of a bigger toy set – and put the corner of it into his mouth. He tried biting down on it a few times. After that, he tried putting into a box that had a few openings on the side, matching several of the toys from the set. He was successful on his third or fourth attempt, finding a square shaped opening, which prompted a small audible exclamation from GD. He then picked up a yellow star from the same set, and tried putting it into the same opening. Failing that, he tried several more openings. Not finding the correct one, he threw the star into a corner. At around the same time, the mother turned on the TV, which showed which showed bright and fast-moving cartoons. GD was very curious with the cartoons, and allowed his mother to pick him up and put him on the sofa without fussing. He watched cartoons for several minutes, sometimes pointing to the screen with right hand index finger. Whenever his hand came into his view, he also looked at it for a few seconds. After a few minutes, he started to look around again. He crawled to the edge of the sofa and turned around to make it easier to get down from there. GD then made a few steps and then broke into a child’s run. He ran to the kitchen, where his mother was. He opened the closest cupboard and tried to get a pot’s lid from there. His mother stern told him to leave it alone, took it from him, closed the cupboard and then turned him around so that he was facing the living room door, suggesting he should go in there. A cat then ran through the door, which drew GD’s attention. He followed the cat, which settled on the sofa to sleep. GD climbed onto the sofa, and proceeded to try and pet the cat. He was using too much force, which caused the cat to run from him, jumping down from the sofa. GD followed the cat with his gaze, saw it leave through the door, and then the cartoon on TV caught his attention again, and he sat on the sofa watching it, exclaiming sometimes in something that was not quite words.
